With the heat picking up on the West Coast our MLB handicapper, Mark Lathrop, thinks that the Overs will be ripe for the picking on Wednesday. Read on as he breaks down two games where the ball should carry for his Picks of the Day.

Washington Nationals vs Los Angeles Dodgers

You know the deal here. A total has presented itself in the sixes so our MLB handicapper will take the system Over. This game on Wednesday afternoon is no different.

Stephen Strasburg gets this start for the Nationals and Clayton Kershaw gets the start for the Dodgers in this making of a pitcher’s duel. Strasburg is currently carrying a 7-1 record, 2.63 FIP, 1.05 WHIP, and .205 BAA. Kershaw is currently carrying a 7-2 record, 2.96 FIP, 0.90 WHIP, and .208 BAA. Sounds like a perfect recipe for an Under, which is why the total has been posted at 6.5 runs across the board.

Enter the Nationals, who have one of the worst bullpens in the league with a 6.27 ERA and 1.66 WHIP. Strasburg hasn’t lasted past 7 innings once this year, so they will see action in this game. For Kershaw, I will point out that his 4-2 O-U record on the year proves that what seems impossible is anything but. I’m sticking to the system and taking the Over of 6.5 in this game, currently available plus odds at 5Dimes as one of my Wednesday MLB Picks of the Day.

Minnesota Twins vs Seattle Mariners

Sometimes one of your picks leads to the next day’s play, as our MLB handicapper watched the Twins’ bullpen get all used up on Tuesday night as Seattle hammered Minnesota. Here he thinks backing more offense is the way to go.

Adalberto Mejia isn’t helping himself out this season, as the rookie Twins starter has issued free passes at a 4.61 BB/9 rate. He’s also gotten lucky with his strand rate, which is why his FIP is sitting at 5.32 versus an ERA of 3.95. Mejia is allowing a .262 batting average allowed and an 1.50 WHIP. But more importantly, Mejia will be lucky to make it past 5 innings in this start against Seattle.
That will turn things over to the Minnesota bullpen, which is the worst in the MLB in overall performance as told by accrued WAR. The Twins relievers have a combined FIP of 5.10 and the worst HR/FB rate in the major leagues at 16.4%.

Yovani Gallardo will be happy to be backed by a hot Seattle offense on Wednesday as he is coming off of a 3-inning, 5 earned run performance against Colorado. Gallardo is running a 5.10 FIP and 16.7% HR/FB rate. These elevated HR/FB rates should come into play on Wednesday as temperatures in the Seattle area will be the hottest they’ve been all year. Either one of these pitchers or the Minnesota bullpen is at risk of getting lit up, so I’m taking Over 9 runs at 5Dimes as one of my Wednesday MLB Picks of the Day.
