Kansas City Royals vs Boston Red Sox

Switching leagues can’t be easy, but it has its advantages when going to a perennial loser to a playoff contender. Our MLB handicapper likes the idea of tailing Trevor Cahill in his first start with the Royals on Saturday.

Trevor Cahill got traded to the Royals last week from the Padres, and with it Kansas City got a starter with a fine 3.40 FIP and 10.62 K/9 rate. Cahill has always been a good pitcher when healthy, and one can only assume that he is healthy if he passed the physical to switch team near the trade deadline. Again, Cahill has picked up some steam with his strikeout rates this year, and has his best K% of 27.4% on the season against a career average of 17.3%. He’s also walking less batters bringing his K-BB% to a great 18.2%. That rate would be rank Cahill in the top 15 pitchers in the league given enough innings under his belt.

Eduardo Rodriguez starts this game for Boston and has also been effective this year. I’m not saying he is bad by any means, but he has a 4.93 FIP in July and a .273 BAA this month as well. This is not a good matchup for Rodriguez because he struggles against lefties and the Royals will have Hosmer, Moss, Moustakas, and Gordon lined up on that side of the plate. They should be able to touch him up for a few runs early, which is why I’m taking the Royals at +135 on the moneyline as a Saturday MLB Pick of the Day.

Houston Astros vs Detroit Tigers

The return of an important cog in the Houston rotation should bolster a certain playoff run. Here we have the Astros as skinny favorites on the road at Detroit.

This will be Collin McHugh’s second start of the year for the Astros with the first being a no decision, yet a winner for the team. Apparently, McHugh has added a slider to his arsenal since being out and hopefully that helps him with his career 0-4 record against Detroit on his career. All McHugh should have to do is keep this game close, however.

The Astros are basically in auto-bet status against left handed starters at this point and put up 6.1 runs per game on average and a .293 batting average. Those are crazy numbers! Matt Boyd comes into this game for the Tigers with a 4.56 FIP and 3.74 BB/9 rate, which are below average. He also allows a .304 BAA against lefties and .306 BAA against righties showing he has nowhere to hide given the lineup that Houston will put out. I’ll take the discount here with McHugh on the mound to back the Astros at -128 on the moneyline at BetDSI as a Saturday MLB Pick.
