Our MLB handicapper looks to start the 2nd half of the season strong by hitting a pair of picks out of the gate on Friday. Read on as he breaks down two matchups that have awesome value going into the weekend.

Our MLB handicapper spots a situation where the All-Star Break is not the ideal situation for a certain pitcher. It should lead to runs in Atlanta on Friday night.

42-year old R.A. Dickey is currently in one of his best stretches of games in years. The knuckle-baller has given up only 3 earned runs in his last 4 starts spanning 27 innings pitched. Also in that span, he has picked up a nifty 23/6 K/BB rate. However, the All-Star Break hasn’t been the best thing for Dickey in the past. Maybe he loses touch of that knuckleball when he’s hanging out with his family throwing a few cold ones back. Whatever it is, there is a multi-season trend of Dickey getting lit up in his first game back from the All-Star Break, usually to the tune of 5 runs or more.

Speaking of losing touch, Arizona’s starter, Taijuan Walker, has seen his walk rate skyrocket over his last 4 starts. In that period, he’s put in a 20/13 K/BB rate which will not be good enough for long term success. This sudden rash of walks coincides with a spike in velocity in an important division game at Colorado on June 21st and after a DL stint in May. Either way, I’ll take him to give up a few runs here and maybe we’ll even get a Fernando Rodney sighting in Atlanta. This combination is enough for me to take the Over of 9.5 runs here as one of my MLB Picks of the Day.

Washington Nationals vs Cincinnati Reds

The Washington Nationals hit the road to start the official second half of the season and visit a rebuilding Cincinnati team with probably looking to sell.

Tim Adleman draws the 52-36 Washington Nationals in his first start back from the All-Star Break, and he likely won’t have success in this matchup. Adleman has put up a 5.61 FIP on the year and a 17.8% HR/FB rate. He’s given up 3 or more runs in his last 4 games and lost 4 decisions in his last 5 starts. Then there is the fact that Washington is killing right handed starters this year to the tune of 5.8 runs per game and a .281 batting average.

Cincinnati on the other hand only scores 4.2 runs per game and puts up just a .252 average against left-handed starters like Washington’s Gio Gonzalez. After a rough May, Gonzalez has been very good in putting up a 3.30 FIP in June and 2.76 FIP in July. In addition, Gonzalez has allowed just a .174 BAA in June and .188 BAA in July. I’ll take the hot pitcher on the winning team in what I see as a very valuable line here. My Friday MLB Pick of the Day is the Washington Nationals on the moneyline, currently -130 at 5Dimes.
