Coming off of a hump day sweep our MLB handicapper, Mark Lathrop, looks to keep things rolling down into the welcome arms of September. Read on as two strong plays present themselves on the short Thursday MLB betting card.

Colorado Rockies vs Kansas City Royals

An electric pitcher faces a team for the first time in interleague play, and our MLB handicapper thinks that backing him is the way to go as we enter the last week of August.

German Marquez gets the start for the Rockies in this game, and he’ll be glad that it isn’t in Coors Field. He’s been decent at home, but absolutely fantastic on the road to the tune of a 3.33 FIP, .248 BAA, and 1.32 WHIP. One of the biggest differences between how Marquez pitches at home and on the road is his strikeout rate, which climbs to 23.5% from 20.5%. Both of those are good marks of course. Even though Marquez has had a bit of a rough stretch for his standards in the last two games, his velocity and peripherals are intact so I’m considering him a positive regression candidate in this game.

The Royals counter with rookie Jakob Junis, who is about to eclipse his most innings pitched in a season. That could be the reason his start was skipped the last time through the rotation, but he also lasted just 2.1 innings in his last start against Cleveland. Junis allows a .276 BAA and 1.50 WHIP at home with a 5.35 xFIP. His velocity has also decline as the season has worn on. Bottom line is that I trust Marquez to pitch much better than Junis here, so I will take the Rockies on the first 5 inning moneyline as one of my Thursday MLB Picks of the Day.

L.A. Dodgers vs Pittsburgh Pirates

A combination of statistical and emotional factors combine on our MLB handicappers next pick. Read on as he breaks down the game after the missed opportunity for Rich Hill in Pittsburgh.

It’s hard to be a pitcher with a losing record on the Dodgers this year, but Hyun-Jin Ryu has managed to make that happen. That should start turning back the other way on Thursday in Pittsburgh, as there is no way that the Dodgers are going to lose this game after losing Rich Hill’s no hitter in the 10th on a walk-off home run. More importantly, there is the fact that Ryu has an away 3.47 away split between the season and a split that favors him considerably against the Pittsburgh lineup.

I’ve also like Chad Kuhl of the Pirates all year, but I believe this spot will work against him. His 6-8 record has obviously cost me some money all year, as has his 4.88 home ERA versus 4.16 on the road. He also got beat by the Dodgers once this year, and even though Chad Bellinger hit a dinger off of him and will miss this game there should be enough Dodger firepower to get over the hump. I’m taking what I believe will be a very motivated Dodger team here on the run line as one of my Thursday MLB Picks.
