Mark Lathrop approaches hump day with one goal in mind... to beat the bookies and put some profit in our pocket! Read on as he makes his Wednesday MLB Picks of the Day.

Chicago White Sox vs L.A. Dodgers

Our MLB handicapper looks at another steep chalk line with the Dodgers, and an opposing pitcher with upside, and can’t help himself but to take runs again.

Carlos Rodon starts for the White Sox on Wednesday and is coming off of 3 fantastic starts in a row. These aren’t starts against pedestrian offenses either, as Rodon has held the Indians, Red Sox, and Astros to two runs or less in each. He’s also put up a fantastic 24/2 K/BB rate over those starts and 23.1 innings as well, and his BABIP in those games suggest that the results are not luck. Rodon hasn’t walked a batter in the month of August. He is the definition of a live dog in this match up.

Rodon will face Yu Darvish, who is coming off of two 10 strikeout performances in a row in his first starts since being traded over from Texas. Maybe it is his career high HR/FB% of 14.8% that doesn’t allow me to trust Darvish, but I find it hard to back a pitcher with an 8-9 record pulling down chalk as steep as -325 at Heritage. I’ll back the hot Rodon plus runs and plus odds here, taking the White Sox on the +1.5 run line at +125 odds at 5Dimes as one of my Wednesday MLB Picks of the Day.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs Houston Astros

Two very solid starters toe the rubber in Houston on Wednesday night, and our MLB handicapper likes the prospect of a pitching duel breaking out.

Both Houston and Arizona had found themselves following Under trends before Tuesday’s matchup that featured a rookie pitcher getting blown up by the Astros. With Taijuan Walker on the mound for the Diamondbacks in this game the chances of that happening again are slim. Walker is in the midst of his best full season in the MLB, with a 4.13 FIP and much improved 11.7% HR/FB rate. He is also allowing just a .235 BAA overall on the year with no real vulnerabilities against either side of the plate.

Walker will go up against Charlie Morton of the Astros who has an excellent 9-5 record and 3.77 FIP on the season. He’s even better than Walker with a .228 BAA overall and 1.25 WHIP on the season. Unlike Walker though, he has a vulnerability of allowing a .286 BAA against righties, although in the 2nd half of the year he has been very hot in allowing just a .194 BAA and 3.21 FIP. With Houston struggling and Arizona on the road where they don’t hit as well as at home I will take the value here and the Under of 9 runs at Pinnacle as another Wednesday MLB selection.
