MLB Picks Of The Day Offer Valuable Chalk Worthy Of Your Bet

Giants vs Padres MLB Odds

Sunday, July 17, 2016 4:16 PM GMT

It's a Sunday in Mid-July and while most of the MLB action takes place in the early afternoon, two of my favorite betting picks are late in the day and Sunday Night Baseball. Let's take a look at our MLB Picks of the Day.

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees
Yankees Are "Boring". Maybe management doesn't know how to acquire players and run a baseball team as the Yankees core group of players are far from impressive and one radio talk host referred to this team as "boring". At 44-46, New York hasn't been below .500 in just about two decades and have been inconsistent all season long. Now, they have the unenviable task of facing their arch rivals, the Boston Red Sox (51-38) on national television and the Yankees are so uninspiring that even with Masahiro Tanaka (6-2, 3.23 ERA) starting the game, they're still underdogs on the MLB odds at home.

No Superstars?
The Yankees offense certainly contains a lot of overpriced and overrated baseball players. Early last season, Mark Teixiera looked like he was going to put up some monster numbers and ever since chronic injuries, he hasn't been the same player. He's currently hitting .186 with 7 HR and 20 RBI. Alex Rodriguez is another culprit as last season he was putting up power numbers and winning games for New York. This season, he's a part-time player hitting a mere .218 with 8 HR and 28 RBI. How about those big acquisitions of Brian McCann and Jacoby Ellsbury that New York spent and arm and a leg for? They're simply average baseball players at best ; a simple waste of money.

Except for Didi Gregorious (11 HR, 41 RBI, .295 BA) and Carlos Beltran (19 HR, 58 RBI, .294 BA), this Yankees offense has been a disaster and in contrast, the Boston Red Sox, who are on a 6 game winning streak, are loaded with young and old talent.

6 Game Winning Streak
Boston looks mighty appealing in this matchup as they go for win number 7 with David Price starting and guys like Xander Bogaerts (11 HR, 59 RBI, .322 BA) and Mookie Betts (18 HR, 59 RBI, .305 BA) to provide run support for Price. Let's also not forget Yankee-killer, David Ortiz, who at age 40, is still dominating this game. Big Papi checked in at .330 with 22 HR and 72 RBI. Every time David Ortiz steps to the plate at Yankee Stadium, the opposing pitcher should be afraid whether it be Masahiro Tanaka or a below average pitcher. Look for the Red Sox to win on national television and make a statement as the Yankees are just no competiton for Boston.

San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres
The Best Team In Baseball? When talking about the San Francisco Giants at 57-35 and the best record in baseball, that remains to be seen. That said, they're definitely a contender to win it all with a combination of outstanding pitching and a respectable offense.

This afternoon, one of their top pitchers in Johnny Cueto (13-1, 2.47 ERA) gets the start and I've been saying this all season long and winning games involving Cueto; He's a National League pitcher.

The All Star Game showed that once again as Cueto had a bit of a tough time, but that's okay because he's been nearly perfect this season when the games really count. San Francisco has always won championships primarily with excellent pitching and solid hitting to back it up. Playing at Petco Park will benefit the Giants as this is a ball park that's "pitcher-friendly".

With all of the positives that have been noted about the Giants, they need a win here as the Dodgers have closed the gap in the National League West Division to 5 1/2 games and the Giants have lost the first two games of this series to the lowly Pads. To make things worse, the Giants are coming off of a 7-6 loss to San Diego in which the Padres scored the winning run off of a balk.

Buster Posey
Some players get a little more credit than their numbers indicate due to timely hitting and leadership. I see Buster Posey as a poor man's Derek Jeter. I know that they play different positions, but both players never put up monstrous numbers, have had great reputations, are winners, and come through in  the clutch.

Lately, Posey is starting to pick up steam and ready for the post-season run.  So far this season, he's hitting .293 with 12 HR and 44 RBI. In his last 3 games, Posey is 6 for 13 with 1 HR and 3 RBI. Look for Posey to be a factor in this game as he's starting to gain confidence and the Giants are in need of a victory. Make San Francisco and Johnny Cueto your MLB bettign pick as the Padres are headed nowhere.
