The New York Yankees will be unable to overcome fatigue after playing on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, which will allow the Detroit Tigers to capture the series opener.

Brought Out the Brooms
Detroit is coming off its first series sweep since July 8-9, as it comes off a 4-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies as -227 home favorites Sunday, while going OVER the betting total for the fourth time in six contests.

The Tigers are worthy road favorites when looking over the MLB betting odds, considering first baseman Miguel Cabrera is hitting .424 with 10 home runs in his last 16 games in the Bronx, while designated hitter Victor Martinez has launched seven round trippers in his past 18 regular-season contests at the new Yankee Stadium.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the franchise is a dominating 38-22 in August, as it prepares to face Monday night’s opponent for the first time in 2014.

Close Encounters
Each of New York’s last 14 games have been decided by two-of-fewer runs, including a 8-7 win over the Boston Red Sox Sunday, which has led to the longest streak of its kind in team history.

Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner has been leading the offense since the beginning of last month with eight home runs over that span, but he’s hitless in 14 career at-bats versus Monday’s opposing starter.

MLB handicappers will find that the Bronx Bombers are 2-9 as home underdogs of +100 to +125, with the UNDER going 6-4-1 in that situation.

Tigers starting pitcher Max Scherzer (13-3, 3.27 ERA) owns a personal five-game winning streak, which includes a 7-2 home victory over the Chicago White Sox last time out—allowing a single run and five hits over seven frames.

The right-hander is 5-2 with a 3.47 ERA in 11 road games, as he’s issued 22 walks and struck out 88 batters in 72.2 combined innings.

When including postseason play, Scherzer has compiled a 6-1 record and 3.12 ERA in seven starts versus the Yankees, with the offense providing him 6.92 runs of support.

Brandon McCarthy (6-10, 4.56 ERA) has watched his teams win his last six trips to the mound, while he’s managed to produce a 3-0 mark and 2.55 ERA in four efforts as a member of the Yankees.

The right-hander is 2-6 with a 4.76 ERA in 12 overall home starts, but he’s notched a perfect 2-0 record and 1.50 ERA in two appearances at this ballpark.

In 16 career games (nine starts) versus the Tigers, McCarthy is 3-3 with a 3.45 ERA.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Tigers as one of their MLB betting picks, as they’ve won 11 of Scherzer’s last 15 starts versus American League East opponents.
