We’ll examine the AL West divisional game on Saturday between Oakland and Texas. Take the time to read this MLB betting preview article which culminates with a money line pick.
AL West Showdown in Arlington on Saturday
The Texas Rangers will host the Oakland A’s on Saturday at 8:05 PM ET. According to the MLB betting odds at Wagerweb, Oakland is a -125 money line favorite, and the posted total is 8.0. This will be the sixth meeting of the season between these AL West rivals, Oakland went 3-2 in the first five, and four of those five went over the total.
Two struggling Teams
Despite their 7-5 win last night versus Texas, Oakland has gone just 2-6 in their last eight games. The A’s have allowed five runs or more in six of their previous seven games. Oakland had nine hits or less in the last eight, and fifteen of their previous sixteen games.
Texas enters today on a four game losing streak, and has dropped seven of their previous eight overall. The Rangers had just nine hits or less in the last eight, and amassed ten hits or more in only three of their first twenty-two games of the season. They’re hitting a dismal .211 as a team so far in 2015, and average an unimpressive 3.6 runs per game.
The Oakland A’s will go with southpaw Drew Pomeranz on the mound today. Pomeranz has been in shaky form over his previous three starts, posting a large 6.60 ERA, and compiling a lofty 1.67 WHIP. He has one career start versus Texas and it came in 2014. In that outing he allowed 7 earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings pitched. Pomeranz has gone a dismal 5-15 in his career team starts.
Nick Martinez will take the mound on Saturday to face Oakland. The young Texas right-hander is off to a terrific start to the season. He’s gone a perfect 4-0 in his team starts with a microscopic 0.35 ERA. One of those starts came at Oakland, and Martinez allowed no earned runs in 7.0 innings during a 10-1 Rangers win. As a matter of fact, he’s made four career starts versus Oakland, all coming since 2014, and has a stellar 2.31 ERA in those outings.
I give a huge edge to Martinez (Rangers) over Pomeranz (A’s) in the starting pitching department. Although the Rangers haven’t been able to hit their way out of a paper bag in the early part of the season, they’ll be facing an opponent that has a paltry team batting average of .224 over their last seven games. Oakland has also gone a money draining 1-8 this season following a win. I’m going to side with the money line home underdog for one of my MLB picks on Saturday.
MLB Pick: Texas +115 on the money line over Oakland at Wagerweb.
