St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is expecting things to turn around offensively, which will lead to a high-scoring affair against the San Diego Padres Thursday night.

Red Hot
San Diego has put together a National League-best 16-8 record since the All-Star break, which includes finishing off a three-game home sweep of the Colorado Rockies Wednesday, while going OVER the betting total for the third time in four opportunities.

The Padres are averaging 4.5 runs per game over that recent stretch, which can’t be ignored when looking over the MLB betting odds, especially since they had seven players in the starting lineup of Latin decent just two days ago.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the franchise has produced a 37-28 mark in August.

Renaissance at the Plate
St. Louis dropped four of six games on its most recent road trip, but the club did manage to hit .265 collectively over that span, which included scoring five runs on 10 hits in 36 at-bats yesterday.

Matheny had his roster skip regular batting practice for more time in the cage, which resulted in leadoff hitter Matt Carpenter collecting his 38th multi-hit game of the 2014 campaign.  He owns a career .405 average in 13 meetings against the Padres.

MLB handicappers will find that the club is 12-15 versus left-handed starters, with the OVER going 14-11-2 in that situation.

Padres starting pitcher Eric Stults (5-13, 4.76 ERA) has won back-to-back trips to the mound for the first time this season, including a 2-1 road victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates last time out—giving up a single run and seven hits in 6.1 innings of work.

The left-hander is 1-9 with a 5.37 ERA in 13 road games, as he’s served up 14 home runs in 68.2 combined frames.

In two lifetime starts versus the Cardinals, Stults has produced a 1-1 record and 4.76 ERA.

Cardinals starting pitcher John Lackey (12-8, 3.98 ERA) is coming off his first nine-run outing since 2011—resulting in a 10-3 road defeat to the Baltimore Orioles last Saturday.

The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA when taking on National League foes this season, as he’s picked up wins against the Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers.

In two career appearances versus the Padres, Lackey has registered a 1-1 record and 4.76 ERA.

I’m going to recommend that readers play the total as one of their MLB picks, as the OVER has cashed in the Cardinals’ last four games when facing a southpaw starter.
