We’ll be examining the MLB opening day matchup between the Angels and Mariners on Monday. Be sure to read this insightful betting preview article on this game which culminates with a run-line selection.
AL West Opening Day Showdown in Seattle
The Seattle Mariners will take on the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. The first pitch is slated for 4:10 PM ET. I’ll be focusing on the run-line regarding this game. According to the MLB betting odds at Pinnacle, Los Angeles is -1.5 (+154), and Seattle comes in at +1.5 (-168) on the run-line. The Mariners were 11-7 versus the Angels a season ago.
Starting Pitching Matchup
Jered Weaver will get the opening day start for the Angels on Monday at Safeco Field. Weaver went 22-13 versus the money line during the 2014 season. However, the veteran right-hander posted a lofty 4.70 ERA in sixteen starts on the road last year. Weaver also saw all seven of his starts in day games go over the total, posting an unimpressive 4.12 ERA in those outings. The Angels hurler went 2-2 in his team starts versus the Mariners in 2014, compiling a 4.43 ERA, and a poor 1.56 WHIP. In his two starts at Seattle in 2014, Weaver allowed four home runs in just 12.0 innings, and posted a less than stellar 5.25 ERA.
Felix Hernandez will take the hill today for the Mariners in their home and season opener. “King Felix” was absolutely dominant versus the Angels during the 2014 MLB campaign going a perfect 5-0. In those five starts he posted a microscopic 0.79 ERA, had an excellent 0.67 WHIP, and a better than 5:1 strikeout to walk ratio. The Mariners ace has given up a paltry two earned runs or less in each of his previous eight starts versus the Angeles, and had a miniscule 1.04 ERA.
The Mariners are predicted to be a major player in the AL West race this season, and justifiably so in my opinion. Although Jered Weaver still remains a quality starting pitcher, he’s not going to be as dominant as he was earlier in his career. I’ve already alluded to the high degree of success that Felix Hernandez has possessed against the Angels in recent times, and that will be a determining factor when making one of my MLB picks on Monday.
MLB Pick: Mariners -1.5 (+154) on the run-line over the Angels at Pinnacle.
