Alex Wood will try to lead the Dodgers to a win on Sunday Night Baseball, a win that would help them avoid a three-game sweep in Pittsburgh. Let's look over the MLB odds for tonight.
Dodgers vs. Pirates Betting Odds
There's really not much in the MLB odds when we compare these two teams, but it's the Dodgers that are favored by the smallest of margins. They're trading at right around -110 to get the win this evening. If you're thinking the Pirates are the play behind Charlie Morton, you can find them at right around even money.
When we look over the game's total, we see the number at an even eight runs, up from seven and a half earlier. PNC Park is a pitcher's park for the most part, but both of these offenses do have some mashers, and Morton and Alex Wood have both been inconsistent at times this season.
Pittsburgh Pirates (Morton)
The Pirates continue to chug along, and they've now won three straight games ahead of tonight's series finale against the Dodgers. Overall, Pittsburgh is at 64-44 on the season, good for second place in the NL Central, though Andrew McCutchen and company are still six games back of the Cardinals for the top spot.
Tonight we will have Charlie Morton taking the bump for the home team. Morton is 7-4 with a 4.19 ERA and 1.28 WHIP so far this season, but he's coming off one of his most dominant outings in quite some time, so confidence should be high. The right-hander pitched seven scoreless innings in a road win over Cincinnati, allowing just five hits to go with seven strikeouts and zero walks.
It was Morton's fourth straight road assignment, but he now gets a chance to pitch at home against, albeit against a dangerous offense, especially against righties. This is a tough test for Morton in what will be his first matchup with Los Angeles of the season; coming in, however, the right-hander has been fantastic at home in 2015, going 4-1 with a 2.52 ERA over six starts.
Los Angeles Dodgers (Wood)
As it stands, the Dodgers are three games up on the Giants for first place in the NL West, and that's obviously a position they'll want to hold on to. It's a race that's going to come down to the wire, so each and every win from this point forward is going to be extremely important.
This series hasn't gone as planned for LA so far, though, as the team has dropped each of the first two games. Tonight it'll be up to Alex Wood to try and calm the storm and pitch a quality outing for the barely favored Dodgers. Wood is 7-7 with a 3.65 ERA and 1.42 WHIP, so he's an up-and-down season just like Morton; in his debut for his new ballclub, the left-hander allowed eight hits and four earned runs over 6 and 1/3 innings in a 6-2 road loss versus Philadelphia.
With the game total up at eight runs, it looks like MLB odds makers think the Dodgers' offense will be able to find success against opposing starter Morton, but maybe they expect the same to happen for Wood. It's not an easy assignment, that's for sure, but Wood has been pitching a lot better in recent weeks.
Wood had a decent debut for the Dodgers against the Phillies, and tonight's matchup isn't going to be any easier, but we think the road team's offense will do enough to help out here against Morton.
Los Angeles has been excellent against right-handed pitching all season long, and while Morton was outstanding in his most recent start, we just haven't see enough consistency to truly trust him.
We know the Dodgers are going to come out with desperation in hopes of avoiding the sweep, and as long as Wood can pitch relatively well and avoid a blowup, we think they'll be able to do just that. With our MLB picks, we're rolling with LA.
