The San Diego Padres possess the worst offense in baseball, but they’ll score just enough against a struggling pitcher in a series-opening contest against the Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday night. Let’s take a closer look at the MLB betting lines for this National League matchup.

Fallen into a pattern
San Diego has alternated wins, and losses, over its last five games, as it attempts to bounce back from a 6-0 defeat to the Washington Nationals as +114 home underdogs Sunday, while going 'under' the betting total for the seventh time in 10 contests. The Padres rank last in the Majors in runs scored by a wide margin, while outfielder Carlos Quentin has gone 0 for 20 at the plate in his last eight games. MLB handicappers will find that the club is 4-5 after getting shut out this season, with the 'under' cashing in seven of those nine opportunities.

June gloom
Philadelphia is a miserable 23-41 in the month of June dating back to the 2012 campaign, while it has dropped eight of its last 10 games entering this series. The Phillies will need someone other than first baseman Ryan Howard to step up offensively in this spot, as he’s hitless in 12 career at-bats versus tonight’s opposing starter. Over the last two-plus seasons, the franchise is just 86-85 when playing a team with a losing record.

Padres starting pitcher Ian Kennedy (5-6, 3.39 ERA) has registered three consecutive wins, including a 3-2 home victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates last time out, as he allowed two runs and five hits over six frames. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA in five road outings—issuing just eight walks and striking out 32 batters in 31 combined innings. Kennedy has compiled a 2-1 record and 2.45 ERA in five lifetime starts versus the Phillies.

Phillies starting pitcher A.J. Burnett (3-5, 4.41 ERA) has watched the club alternated wins and losses over his last five trips to the mound, as he attempts to bounce back from a 8-4 setback on the road to the Washington Nationals. The right-hander has gone 1-4 with a 7.25 ERA in his last six efforts—a forgettable stretch as he continues to pitch threw a hernia injury.Burnett tallied a 1-1 mark and 1.98 ERA in two appearances versus the Padres in 2013.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Padres as one of their MLB picks, as the Phillies have dropped six of their last seven games following an off day.
