Oakland A’s (Graveman) vs. Cleveland Indians (Salazar) (-155) 7:10 ET
The Oakland A’s visit the Cleveland Indians for this 7:10 ET start of a 3-game weekend set that will close out the first half of the season for each team. Cleveland has been sneaky good of late behind an emerging pitching staff, while Oakland has been one of the biggest underachievers in MLB this season. But at this price, we are looking at the red hot Graveman as our Big Pitching Dog of the night.
Cleveland has clearly turned things around after their 14-23 start. The Tribe has since gone 27-21 with a recent run of 8-3. Much of it can be attributed to the emergence of a young starting staff. Kluber, last year’s CY Young winner, is pitching far better than his stats and there are emerging young arms in Carrasco, Bauer, C. Anderson and Salazar. But, seldom is every pitcher pitching well for a team. Such is the case with tonight’s starter, Salazar, who in his most recent 5 outings has gone 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA.
In the previous 4 years, Oakland won 278 games, the most in baseball. The A’s won 90 or more games in each of those 4 seasons. At 39-49, the A’s will be happy to post a winning season in 2015. Much of it can be attributed to a run of 2-14 in May, which dropped them to 14-30, the worst record in MLB after 44 games. They have rebounded decently going 25-18 since that time. But, the most recent 5-8 run has been characterized by the A’s going 18-92 with RISP. A bright light for Oakland has been resurgent starter, Graveman. Much was expected from Graveman after a solid spring. His fortunes dipped precipitously to start the season, resulting in a trip to the minor leagues. Since his recall, however, he has pitched outstanding baseball. In 6 games, he has worked 7 or more innings in each with a 1.26 ERA. His best work has come on the road, where in his 7 starts, the A’s are 5-2 with Graveman posting a 1.91 ERA.
Note before placing your MLB picks that each of these teams has offered positive returns in their most recent 50 games. But, the YTD record provides us with some nice value in this contest. While Salazar has struggled since the beginning of June, Graveman has been among the best pitchers in baseball in that timeframe. The Big Dog price is gravy, as is the record of Graveman and Oakland in his road starts.
