The Boston Red Sox have been a dreadful option as large road underdogs in recent years, which will lead to an easy victory for the Los Angeles Angels in Friday night’s series opener.

Dormant offense
Boston ranks last in the American League this year in runs scored, which was clearly evident in its 5-2 setback to the St. Louis Cardinals as +150 road underdogs Thursday, while it went 'Under' the betting total for the sixth time in eight contests.

The Red Sox are expected to welcome back designated hitter David Ortiz to the lineup, which is important to note when making your MLB betting picks, considering he’s 11 for 37 in his career against tonight’s opposing starter.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the franchise is 1-5 as underdogs of +175 to +200 when playing away from Fenway Park.

Time to face lesser competition
After producing an even 10-10 record in playing 17 of its last 20 games against teams with a winning record, Los Angeles is primed to get back in the win column after dropping two in a row, which includes a 7-0 defeat to the Dodgers as -101 home underdogs last night.

The Angels are hitting just .226 since the All-Star break—far different than their .269 batting average during the opening half of the 2014 campaign.

Outfielder Mike Trout will lead the charge in this matchup due to his .404 career average versus the Red Sox, which will help the Halos improve to 9-1 as home favorites of -175 to -200.

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Allen Webster (1-1, 6.75 ERA) will attempt to bounce back from a 6-4 home defeat to the New York Yankees last Saturday, as he allowed four runs and two hits over 2.2 innings of work.

The right-hander has struggled with his control when facing professional hitters—issuing 29 walks and striking out 28 batters in 38.1 career frames.

Webster produced a 3.10 ERA in 21 appearances at Triple-A Pawtucket this year, as he prepares to face the Angels for the first time in his career.

LA Angels starting pitcher Jered Weaver (12-6, 3.59 ERA) will put his personal five-game win streak on the line, as he comes off a 7-5 road victory over the Tampa Bay Rays last time out.

The right-hander is 6-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 13 home appearances—serving up just six home runs in 84.2 combined innings.

Weaver has compiled a 2-0 record and 2.61 ERA in his last three overall efforts against the Red Sox.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Angels as one of their MLB picks, as the Red Sox are a miserable 14-38 in their last 52 games as road underdogs of +151 to +200, while the Angels have captured 29 of Weaver’s last 39 trips to the mound as a home favorite of -151 to -200.
