The Los Angeles Angels increased their lead in the AL West with a win Monday night in Boston. Can the Red Sox bounce back to even the MLB odds series in Game 2?

If not for one play in the top of the eighth inning of Monday's series opener in Boston between the Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels, the two teams might have played well into the night.  Instead, the Angels took Game 1 by a 4-2 count to move a half-game in front of Oakland in the AL West race.

Boston starter Brandon Workman officially took the loss, but it was reliever Junichi Tazawa's double-error in the eighth that decided matters.  The Red Sox tried to keep the game interesting in the bottom of the ninth, and actually outhit the Angels 9-7, but the middle of their order couldn't come through.

The Red Sox look to even this 4-game set Tuesday (7:10 PM ET) as bigger underdogs on the MLB odds than they were for Game 1.  Jered Weaver and the Angels are carrying chalk in the upper-130s for the matchup; Allen Webster gets the call for Boston with most baseball betting outlets offering a 9 run total.

Weaver Out To Avenge Aug. 8 Loss To Webster & Sox
Boston beat Weaver 11 days ago in Anaheim, getting to the lanky righthander for four runs in six innings, Mike Napoli plating one of those with a solo shot.  Weaver bounced back with a win five days later vs. the Phillies, surrendering just two runs over six frames.

Fenway Park has not always been kind to Weaver, his ERA up over 6.00 on this mound.  He has managed to win three games here, however, one of those dubyas coming in a relief performance in Game 3 of the 2008 ALDS.

Webster is making his fifth start for the Red Sox, and third at Fenway where he sports a 7.27 ERA in the first two assignments.  Control has been a huge issue for the 24-year-old, 16 walks in less than 21 innings against just 10 strikeouts.  Webster was on the winning end of the 4-2 victory against Weaver and the Halos on Aug. 8, allowing two runs and pitching into the seventh in his first career appearance against LA.

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick
After making his MLB umpiring debut in April, Tom Woodring has rotated in and out of different crews and built an early following with baseball bettors who bet the high side of totals.  A New Jersey native who now calls Nevada home, Woodring is 11-5 O/U so far in his young career, with 9 runs the highest total he has worked in a game.

The Angels are expected to have Josh Hamilton back in their lineup tonight after he missed the last two games to 'rest his mind.'  He's a career .324 hitter at Fenway with four homers in 102 at bats, but Hamilton is having a puny 2014 on top of poor numbers a year ago, his first in a Halos uniform.

I'm not sure if Hamilton will be any help to either the Angels or my free MLB pick, but I still like this contest going past the scoreboard barrier.

MLB pick: Angels-Red Sox Over 9
