After an emotional walk off win yesterday I am going to back the Los Angeles Angels as the underdog and on the plus money line when they visit the Chicago White Sox.
Angels vs. White Sox MLB Odds
With Chris Sale on the mound for the White Sox it makes sense that they are favored in this spot even against the Angels ace in Hector Santiago. The White Sox came out by odds makers at around -140 favorite putting the Angels around a +125 underdog. The best odds I have seen on Los Angeles is at +129 at Pinnacle sports book, that is great value on a team that should start making a push towards the playoffs.
Los Angeles Angels
Santiago gets the start for the Angels and comes in with a 2.70 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 122 strikeouts, and a 7-5 record. He has not been sharp recently as far as his earned runs go but he consistently keeps the hit totals down. In his last five starts he has allowed 13 total earned runs, but in his last two he allowed eight. This a pretty good spot for him to bounce back and his road ERA is fine at 3.04. Los Angeles really needs a quality start out of him considering the ace they're facing today in Sale from the White Sox.
At the plate Los Angeles ranks 13th in the major leagues in runs scored at 4.17, 18th in OPS at .701, and rank towards the bottom of the league in batting average at .247. Their home and away disparity really is pretty equal in these categories and they are pretty consistent whether they're playing in Los Angeles are on the road. Overall offensively they're better team than the White Sox, period.
Chicago White Sox
Even coming off of two bad starts it makes sense for Chris Sale to be the favorite because of his career numbers. On the year he comes in with a 3.52 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 186 strikeouts, and in 9-7 record. The issue for him has been his recent performance as he has been knocked around by both the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays allowing 14 earned runs in just 10 innings in his last two starts. I don't anticipate the Angels to keep up this type of consistency against him, but it shows that he is human and they should be able to get enough to support Santiago and allow him to do his job and shut down the White Sox.
Offensively the White Sox are one of the worst teams in the major leagues ranking 25th in runs scored per game at 3.74, 25th in OPS at .684, and 20th in batting average hitting .250 as a team. The strange thing for them is that their offensive statistics go down at home compared to on the road. For example, although overall they have a better batting average than Los Angeles, at home they only hit .242 compared to the Angels on the road who hit .248.
This a game with a great pitching matchup but with two teams headed in different directions. Although Sale is in a pretty good bounce back spot Santiago is as well, I am anticipating we should see both pitchers perform exceptionally. Overall though Los Angeles is the better team with more momentum on their side than the White Sox so this is good value on a team that desperately needs to continue to roll. Take the value on the Angels as the underdog MLB pick today.
