The Phillies and Mets continue their MLB odds series Tuesday in Queens, Matt Harvey set to make his first start in front of the home fans in about 21 months.
Jacob deGrom set the bar pretty high for the rest of New York's rotation with a 99-pitch string of zeroes in the Mets' 2-0 home opening win Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies. The first arm to have a chance at continuing the goose eggs is Matt Harvey, pitching in front of the Amazin's faithful for the first time since August 2013.
David Buchanan is Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg's choice to oppose Harvey in the 7:10 PM (ET) matchup at Citi Field. Baseball bettors will want to keep an eye on the weather reports with the area expecting a solid chance of rain during the morning and early afternoon. It's supposed to clear out by mid-afternoon, the thermometer around 60 at first pitch before falling a few degrees as the game progresses.
It's going off as one of the biggest mismatches so far this season with Harvey and the Mets in the -235 to -250 range on the MLB odds. Tuesday's total is 6 to 6½.
New York Staff Sporting 2.55 ERA Through 7 Games
An overflow crowd Monday of nearly 44K saw deGrom and his bullpen combine to blank the Phils, the youngster benefitting from a couple of double plays while scattering seven hits. Jeurys Familia picked up his second save in as many days after moving into the closer's role, New York's two runs coming on an infield single and a sac fly.
The chalky win for Mets backers left them up a unit-&-a-half on the young season, and stopped a 4-game run of 'over' winners for New York. Betting on the Phillies has now cost you about half a buck, but the 'under' has been a winner (2-4-1 O/U/P).
Starting Pitchers, Umpire Notes & A Free Pick
Buchanan was beaten, battered and left for dead by the Red Sox in his season debut last Thursday in Philly. Boston coaxed four walks off the 2nd-year pitcher and found holes with seven additional hits; Buchanan was solid in his only appearance at Citi Field a year ago (6 IP, 1 ER), but the fact remains the Phillies are 0-3 in his matchups vs. the Mets.
Harvey is off six shutout innings vs. Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals last Thursday last Thursday in DC. His first official appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery near the end of the 2013 season followed a brilliant spring when Harvey allowed three earnies in almost 23 innings while whiffing 21. He owns a sub-1.90 ERA lifetime at Citi Field, and the Mets are 4-1 in his previous five starts vs. the Phils.
Alfonso Marquez is expected to make his 2015 season debut behind the plate for the group that lines up as Crew E on the official MLB.com page. The crew drew vacation for Week 1 on the MLB betting schedule, and Marquez slightly favored the 'under' a year ago. Despite that and the low output on Monday, I'm going 'over' for my free MLB picks on Tuesday.
