Winners of four of their last five, the Seattle Mariners open a 4-game series Monday against the Houston Astros as small home underdogs on the MLB odds.

The two teams chasing them open a huge series in Seattle, where the Mariners welcome the defending champion Houston Astros for three games, the opener pitting a couple of former SEC left-handers who are each searching for their first win of 2018.

Houston is beginning a 7-game road trip, the first four of those taking place in Seattle, and the Astros send Dallas Keuchel (0-2, 4.20) out to start Game 1 of the long set. The Mariners counter with James Paxton (0-1, 5.74) in the 10:10 PM (ET) contest. After opening Houston -125, 5Dimes now has the Astros -117 on the money line and most shops are carrying an 8-run total that is juiced a little more to the low side.

Astros 2-6 In Keuchel’s Last 8 Road Starts

Some control issues have dogged Keuchel in the early going, the former Razorback walking four in each of his last two starts. Both of his road outings have ended in loss with the Astros winning his only home assignment, and that’s nothing new with Keuchel a far better pitcher in Houston in recent years – 25-8 with a 2.26 ERA in 42 games – compared to away appearances (18-19, 4.42, 43 starts). He is 1-2 with a 5.49 ERA in three starts at Safeco since the start of the 2015 campaign.

After being shelled at home by the Indians in his season debut, Paxton has settled down with fine showings the last two times out. Both came on the road as the favorite on the MLB odds, the Mariners splitting the contests while the former Kentucky star allowed four earned in 11 combined frames at Minnesota and Kansas City. Paxton was stingy against the Astros a year ago, pitching to a 1.69 ERA and not allowing a homer though Seattle only managed to win two of the four starts.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Happy Birthday to the @MarinerMoose!

You're—you're gonna have to apologize for this... ;/a>
— Mariners (@Mariners) April 16, 2018
\n\n"}[/]

Houston On 6-Game Run In Rivalry

Safeco Field has been something a home away from home for the Astros who have won 31 of the 49 games played here. Houston has won each of the last three season series, ending 2017 on a 6-game run and taking 7 of 9 in Seattle. ‘Under’ bettors returned to the pay window 13 of 19 meetings in 2017, the low side cashing 6 of 9 in Emerald City.

Nearly no-hit by Bartolo Colon on Sunday, the Astros have yet to get their offense in gear. They will at some point, which is bad news for teams on their schedule later on, but until they do playing against them is my modus operandi. Paxton and the Mariners earn my trust as a free baseball pick on Monday.
