The Angels are still alive in the AL playoff race, but are faltering. The A's, meanwhile, zero chance, but have won 3 in a row. How do we approach Tuesday's game from a betting standpoint?

Angels-A's Tuesday Odds
As of this writing the best price we could find on Anaheim on the MLB odds market with Matt Shoemaker was the -104 offered at Heritage, while Oakland with rookie righty Cody Martin was getting +105 at BetOnline. And the total on tonight's game sat at 7.5 runs.

The Situation
Oakland took the opener of this series Monday night 11-5, putting up a five-spot in the bottom of the third inning to overcome an early 3-0 deficit, piling on six more runs from there on the Anaheim bullpen. So the A's have won three games in a row, while the Angels have lost four straight.

At 65-66 Anaheim has fallen below .500 for this first time since early June. Last night the Angels missed a chance to make up a game in the American League wild-card race, and still trail Texas by 3.5 games in the battle for the second wild-card spot.

Oakland, meanwhile, at 58-74 is just playing out the string this season, but lately having fun doing it.

These division rivals have now split 14 meetings this season, with the OVERS going 10-4, in part because of some high-scoring games, but also because of some low totals.

Tuesday's Twirlers
Martin (2-3, 5.40) will be making his first ML start Tuesday, after 21 appearances in relief for Atlanta earlier this season. The former seventh-round draft pick from 2011 has allowed 24 hits through 21 2/3 innings in the Majors this season, with seven walks and 24 strikeouts. He's also 4-7 with a 4.08 ERA in Triple-A ball this year, with 39 walks and 84 strikeouts through 88 innings.

Martin came over to the Oakland organization in a trade with the Braves back in July.

This will be Martin's first-ever appearance against Anaheim.

Shoemaker (6-9, 4.48), by our tough standards, is nine-for-22 on quality starts this season, running a bit hot-'n-cold as of late. A while back he went six straight starts of allowing two runs or less; then he got bombed for 13 runs in less than eight innings in starts against the White Sox and Kansas City; but last time out, last Thursday, following a quick demotion to the Minors, he tossed 7 1/3 innings of one-hit shutout ball against Detroit, with one walk and five strikeouts. On the season the second-year Major Leaguer has allowed 124 hits, including 21 homers, through 125 innings, while posting a pretty good K/BB ratio of 110/31.

Anaheim is 10-12 in Shoemaker's starts, with the totals splitting 10-10.

Shoemaker has already started against Oakland four times this season, giving up 16 earned runs and 27 hits through 18 1/3 innings; the Angels managed to split those four games, while all four games played OVER.

Tuesday's Batting Splits
Anaheim ranks 27th in the Majors this season against right-handed pitching with a .305 team on-base percentage, and 25th with a .387 team slugging percentage.

Oakland ranks 18th against righties with a .312 team OBP and 23rd with a .390 team slugging percentage.

We'll call tonight's battle of the bats a wash.

Ballpark Totals Factor
Games played at the O.Co Coliseum this season are 34-30 on the OVERS, even though they're only averaging 7.7 runs per.

Angels-A's Tuesday Free Picks
It looks like Anaheim is going in the tank, while Oakland is playing with a little spirit at the moment. And the fact that Angels hitters haven't faced Martin before might give him an edge, at least for the first couple of times through the lineup. We'll take the A's for tonight. Also, while we whiffed with our MLB game pick on Anaheim last night, we hit with the OVER, and with a little help from these bullpens we can see tonight's game going OVER, too.

MLB Picks: Oakland and OVER 7.5 runs (+102) at Pinnacle
