We see value in the MLB odds underdogs in Game 1 between the San Diego Padres with Odrisamer Despaigne and the Colorado Rockies with veteran Jorge De La Rosa.
Not a Fun Place to Pitch
Coors Field is not fun for any major pitcher, just a tough ballpark to be successful. I have always liked De La Rosa and he has gutted his way through seven season pitching for the Rockies, just a good major league pitcher. But he is coming off of rehab and Despaigne is solid enough for me that the value is with the Padres.
MLB odds makers have come out making the Rockies the favorite at home in this spot at around -120, and the Padres around +110, pretty good number for a team playing well right now in San Diego. In their careers Despaigne has the better numbers with a 3.36 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in just 17 career starts. Veteran De La Rosa comes in with a career of 4.60 and a 1.44 WHIP, I imagine though if he pitched for someone else his numbers would be much better. Despaigne still has a lot to prove but if he keeps the ball down he should have success, he is pretty decent at keeping the ball in the park with only 6 homeruns last year in over 90 innings.
Not a Lot of Weak Spots
Both offenses come in as two of the best in MLB so far this season. So far this year these two teams have solid stats and are both ranked in the top ten in batting average, slugging, total bases, and hits. In runs the Rockies are ranked 9th and Padres 11th. They are also in the top 10 in the advanced metrics of Batting Average on Balls in Play (ranked 3rd and 4th), and run differential (Colorado 6th and San Diego 9th). This game could get really interesting but I like the Padres to keep things rolling here, they are a little bit hotter right now at 7-3 in their last 10 with the Rockies at 5-5 in that same time span. Should be a good game and I am taking the better value with the Padres as my MLB picks to win today.
