Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, has produced its fair share of runs this season so it is no surprise that odds makers have set a high total when the San Diego Padres come to visit. We are going to take a closer look at this total and see if there is value backing the over or under.

San Diego Padres

Clayton Richard gets the start for San Diego and comes in with a 4.36 ERA and 1.45 whip. I’ve a hard time believing he is going to come in today and put up a lot of zeros on the board considering the hits he has allowed in his last four appearances. Over those starts he’s allowed an incredible 35 hits but surprisingly his lowest total, five, came against this same Diamondback team in which he was stellar allowing just one earned run in nine innings as well. For me though I like Arizona to put up a lot more runs today considering they’ll get their second look at him in just a few weeks. What gives me pause about backing the over in this contest is the light hitting bats of the San Diego Padres. There is not a lot to like about this offense as they rank in the bottom three in just about every offensive category across the board. However, they do get the opportunity to face a pitcher that has had his own struggles over his past several starts.

 Arizona Diamondbacks

Patrick Corbin takes the mound for Arizona and comes in with a 5.43 ERA and 1.58 whip. I’m not sure what the major problem is with him this year but he has definitely not pitched very well. Over his last five starts he’s got knocked around considerably allowing 23 earned runs in those contests spanning just 27 innings.  At the plate Arizona has been swinging the bats well all season and rank in the top part of the league in most categories.  Currently they rank sixth in both OPS and total bases, as well as ranking 10th and 11th in batting average and runs per game respectively.  They hit very well at home and I believe they will put up more than their share of runs in this early contest.

 MLB Odds

Oddsmakers have come out making the total on this game quite high at 9.5 but for my MLB pick, I am going to back over the total.  Look for both of these pitchers to get hard in this contest.
