The NL West-rival San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers conclude a three-game series on Sunday Night Baseball. Read on for our Padres-Dodgers MLB picks.

The Dodgers have an 18-game lead on the Padres in the NL West, which is more games than separates the entire AL East division and equals the gap between first place and last place in the AL Central. However, the Padres have a chance to make a statement Sunday that they will be a tough out in the playoffs if they can win the rubber match of this three-game series.

Here are my MLB picks and predictions for Sunday’s game between the Padres and Dodgers (odds via FanDuel Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook, and DraftKings Sportsbook; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Padres vs. Dodgers Odds Analysis

L.A.'s moneyline odds range from -160 to -165. They have been overwhelmingly popular favorites so far, receiving 77% of the tickets and 99% of the cash.

FanDuel is the lone major sportsbook offering a total of 9.5, as all others are at 9.0. As of early Sunday morning, the Over had attracted 67% of the bets and 83% of the cash.

Padres vs. Dodgers Projected Pitchers

Mike Clevinger (5-5, 3.59 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) vs. Ryan Pepiot (2-0, 4.02 ERA, 1.40 WHIP)

Mike Clevinger's 7.7 K/9 rate is on pace to be the worst of his career, and his 1.3 HR/9 rate thus far is his worst since his rookie year of 2016. However, the Padres starter's walk rate (2.8/9 innings) is also the second-lowest of his career, and he has allowed three or fewer earned runs in seven of his previous eight starts.

Ryan Pepiot is making the eighth start of his Major League career and first against San Diego. The Dodgers rookie has failed to complete five innings in five of his first seven starts but is coming off a career-high seven-strikeout performance in a win against the Miami Marlins in his latest start.

Padres vs. Dodgers Pick

Padres ML (+142) ★★★

The Dodgers do not often lose games handily, so it is even amazing that L.A.'s 7-1 loss in the series opener on Friday night made history. The loss snapped L.A.'s record streak of 228 consecutive regular-season games of losing games by five or fewer runs, a streak that beat the previous record by 80 games. However, even if the result was just a one-off, it gave the Padres confidence that anything could happen between these two teams if they got into the playoffs.

We trust Clevinger's years of experience in the league more than Pepiot, who is appearing on a national broadcast for the first time. Pepiot has made two starts against teams with a winning record, and the Dodgers have split those two games, which makes us like San Diego's odds as road underdogs.

Padres vs. Dodgers O/U Pick

Over 9 (-115) ★★★★

Clevinger has pitched 85 ⅓ innings, but even that low number is getting close to his highest innings total for a season since 2019 (126.0). Thus, the team will likely monitor his innings down the stretch. It should also be a short night for Pepiot, as the only time he lasted past the fifth inning was against a Marlins team that is the second-lowest scoring team in the National League. We should see plenty from the bullpens in this one, leading to more scoring.

The scorching-hot temperatures will have the ball traveling and could be difficult for each starting pitcher to contend with.

Padres vs. Dodgers Prop Pick

Betts Over 0.5 RBIs (+150) ★★

Mookie Betts is coming off a three-RBI performance in Saturday's 12-1 blowout win over the Padres. Betts now has 33 home runs and 73 RBIs on the season hitting at the top of the Dodgers lineup.

He is slashing .333/.407/.875 over the last seven days, and we expect that success to continue against Clevinger, against whom he is 6-for-10 with four RBIs in his career.
