Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs engineered a come from behind 5-3 win against Cincinnati in the opener of this series last night and will be looking to make it two straight home wins at Wrigley Field behind veteran pitcher John Lackey. Lackey will be looking to bounce back from a rough first start against Arizona where he allowed 6 runs on 8 hits and a pair of homers in 6 innings of work against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field last week but it is worth noting the roof was open at Chase Field in that game and the baseball was flying out of the park.
Lackey should be dealing with more comfortable pitching conditions here at Wrigley Field and will be up against a Reds lineup that he had great success against last season holding them to 11 runs and a solid 31-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 34 innings pitched against them as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2015. This been a better than expected Reds offense through the first week of the new season as they’ve scored 34 runs in their first 7 games combined.
Alfredo Simon who is back with Cincinnati after a stint in Detroit is a fringe arm and an average at best Major League starting pitcher. Simon had a 5.05 ERA in 31 starts for the Tigers last season. Simon gave up 2 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings in his first start this season against Pittsburgh but his pitch count was driven up by the patient Pirates lineup as he averaged over 18 pitches per inning and that knocked him out of the game early.
Simon hasn’t faced the Chicago Cubs since 2014 and fared well that season against them but there is no comparison between the feeble Cubs lineup two years ago and the very potent and deep lineup they now possess here in 2016. Check the MLB picks for this tight game.
I think this game has a potential to see some runs scored in it and both bullpens particularly Cincinnati’s have not performed well and that was evident last night when the Reds bullpen blew a 3-1 lead and surrendered 4 runs in the last three innings to lose the game. The Over in this game and maybe even more so, the Chicago Cubs Team Total Over may be worth a second look in this game.
Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox
Wednesday night will be the finale of a three game series between AL East rivals the Orioles and Red Sox. Ubaldo Jimenez will be on the mound for Baltimore and he had a good first start against Minnesota allowing 2 runs on 8 hits in 7 innings and a terrific 9 strikeouts without a walk.
Jimenez will be facing a much tougher lineup here against the Boston at Fenway Park and his velocity only tops out in the low 90’s at this stage of his career but Jimenez did put together a solid profile against Boston last season as he held them to 3 runs or less in each of his starts at Fenway in 2015. Joe Kelly will get the nod for Boston and I still think there is some upside for him as a starter for the Red Sox but there is no doubt, consistency and control issues have plagued him.
In his first start against Toronto, he was cruising through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the 4th inning loading the bases and eventually Josh Donaldson delivered the big blow with a Grand Slam to put the Jays up 7-2 and Kelly was taken out early and left with a nasty stat line allowing 7 runs on 7 hits in 3 innings with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.
Kelly allowed 11 runs in 11.2 innings over a span of three starts against Baltimore last season and the Orioles lineup has been crushing the ball early in the season scoring 4+ runs in 5 straight games and 31 runs overall in 6 games to start the season – a major reason why the Orioles are 6-0 to begin the campaign. It’s worth noting that if this game is close in the latter innings, the Orioles bullpen may have a slight edge as they have been terrific early in the season. Check the lines of all MLB odds boards here.
Baltimore has the 6th ranked bullpen in the Majors in ERA through the first week of the season with a 1.78 ERA which has been another major factor in the early season success for the Orioles. It’s hard to ignore any underdog plus price tag with Baltimore right now the way the entire lineup is hitting specifically Manny Machado and Chris Davis and so far, their starting pitchers have held up well enough and that was the predominant question mark for Baltimore heading in to the season.
Check wind conditions prior to the first pitch at Fenway Park because if the wind is blowing out, it may lead to another slugfest in this ballpark with both starting pitchers Jimenez and Kelly being susceptible to the long ball in their first start of the 2016 season.
