Two solid hitting lineups collide when the Orioles visit the Yankees in one of today’s earlier MLB matchups. Veteran Ubaldo Jimenez takes on Michael Pineda and oddsmakers have made the total quite high. Is there value on taking a shot at over?

Baltimore Orioles

Ubaldo Jimenez takes the mound for Baltimore and comes in with a 5.95 ERA and 1.63 whip on the season. He has already faced the Yankees once this season and he got lit up for five earned runs in just four innings off seven hits. I have a hard time believing he’s going to be able to keep the Yankees to a reasonable number so I think there is value in backing over the total for this matchup.

In his last three seasons having faced the Yankees seven times over 35 innings he has not fared well allowing 40 hits in that span, 23 runs, along with the Yankees hitting .284 against him for 5.80 ERA. At the plate, Baltimore has enough offensively to get their share of runs although statistically, they are not where they should be. On the season Baltimore ranks just outside the bottom half of most major league teams ranking 20th, 21st, and 22nd, in OPS, batting average, and runs per game respectively. Still, it is early in the season and this is a good lineup that I believe will be able to put together some quality at-bats and score some runs today.

 New York Yankees

Michael Pineda gets the start for New York and comes in with a 3.86 ERA and 1.03 whip on the season. I like Pineda personally but his numbers are not that great versus Baltimore over the last few seasons and I don’t see him holding down the Orioles enough to stay under this total. Over the past three years in 10 appearances, he has a 4.50 ERA against them with Baltimore hitting .260 against him.

At the plate, New York is been one of the better hitting teams in all of baseball and they should come in with a lot of confidence today against Jimenez, the Yankees rank fifth, six, and seventh in OPS, hits per game, and batting average respectively. They’re also averaging almost five runs per game and at home, they have solid statistics across the board. Look for them to have a lot of quality at-bats to lead the way in getting this game over the total.

Baltimore Orioles vs N.Y. Yankees

Not surprisingly, oddsmakers have set this total decently high at 9 for this matchup. For my MLB pick, I’m not going to over think it and just back the 'Over'. Expect a lot of quality at-bats from both teams and for runs to come early and often.
