The Yankees remain the leaders of the AL East, and Orioles are waiting to get some offensive momentum. How will these teams react on the MLB odds for game 2 of their 4-game weekend series?

The Baltimore Orioles Can Win Because…
They are going to play with desperation in this game, and they have the much better pitcher in this matchup, one who has already performed well against the Yankees this season. Miguel Gonzalez will bring a snappy 2.59 ERA to the mound for this game. He’s been sharp through the first month of the 2015 season, and he’s coming off a 7 2/3-inning shutout of Tampa Bay on May 2. He allowed just four hits and one walk. He’s in rhythm right now. What’s more is that in his previous start against the Yankees this year, on April 14, he wasn’t just effective – he was dominant and overwhelming. Gonzalez fanned 10 Yankees and gave up just four hits in seven innings. He allowed only one walk and only one run. Getting hitters to swing and miss as regularly as Gonzalez did suggests that he has a very good read on what the Yankees’ hitters are going to do. This should put Baltimore in a highly favorable position against New York.

What’s also worth saying about this matchup is that New York’s starter is one of the weaker links of the Yankees’ pitching rotation. Adam Warren has a bloated 4.78 ERA for the Yankees. He has been a beneficiary of great run support this season – he’s given up at least four runs in three of his five starts, and in those three starts, he never pitched six complete innings. Warren does not overpower hitters the way Gonzalez can at times. This is an imbalanced matchup in Baltimore’s favor. That the Orioles really need to begin to make a move in the American League East should help them to play with the right intensity in this game on Friday.

The New York Yankees Can Win Because…
They are playing a Baltimore team that is struggling at the plate. The Orioles have not scored more than four runs in a game since an April 29 win over the Chicago White Sox. They could not solve New York’s bullpen on Thursday night, going hitless in 3 1/3 innings against the Yankees’ relievers. The Orioles threatened constantly against New York starter Nate Eovaldi, but they got only three runs off six hits and three walks. They ran themselves out of an inning when a runner was picked off first base in a “first and third, one out” situation. The Orioles are making losing plays in games. They’re in a rut, and New York could keep them there as home favorites on the MLB odds board for this game 2. The Orioles are bad enough at the plate that Warren and the Yankee pen could hold them down.

The Orioles are playing poorly, the Yankees not very poorly. Yet, the pitching matchup is lopsided enough to indicate that Baltimore should win. Take the O’s with your MLB picks.
