NY Yankees (Sabathia) vs. Baltimore Orioles (M. Gonzales) (-120) 7:05 ET
The NY Yankees and Baltimore Orioles continue their 3-game set after the Yankees held on for a 6-5 victory in the series’ opener last night. Each of these teams enters with a 3-4 SU record, and the Orioles are set as favorites on the MLB odds.  But, the Yankees enter off a pair of victories, while Baltimore is on a1-4 slide. There has been plenty of hitting among these clubs, as Baltimore has scored 25 runs in their 4 home games this season, while the Yankees have scored 29 runs in their most recent 4 contests.  Each team has 12 HRs to lead the majors in that category.

Here's another capper's take on this matchup for Yankees/Orioles

The Yankees are a team in decline, as indicated by the fact their 95 wins in 2012 eroded to just 84 victories last season. They will be fortunate to be a winning team this season.  A main reason is a defense that has committed a Major League worst, 10 errors.  It is also highly unlikely that the aging hitters such as A-Rod, Beltran and Teixeira will hold up for the entire 162-game grind.  Clearly, the leadership of Jeter is missed! But, the real issues for this team is a debilitated pitching staff whose best 3 starters, Tanaka, Pineda and Sabathia all have major health concerns.  None is more likely to struggle than today’s starter, C.C. Sabathia.  This is a big-name pitcher clearly on the decline.  After 6 incredible seasons, ending in 2012, the downward spiral began in 2013.  A 4.78 ERA was a full point higher than any in the previous 6 seasons. That was followed by a 2014 season which consisted of only 8 starts, until May 10th, when he underwent knee surgery. A spring training in which he worked 10 IP, allowing 9 runs on 14 hits and 3 HRs did nothing to strengthen his case.  Nor did his opener against Toronto, in which Sabathia worked 5 2/3 IP, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits.  Many will offer the fact that Sabathia is 18-6 with a 3.34 ERA vs. Baltimore, with the Yankees winning 17 of his most recent 22 starts.  But that history far belies his current form.

Far prefer the big bats of Baltimore that have continued to boom this season. Under manager Buck Showalter, the Birds have been a solid winner, including 93 wins in 2012, 85 in 2013, and 96 last season. That included a 50-31 record on this field, 2ndin the American League. Today’s starter, M. Gonzales, had a solid first start working 5 2/3 IP, allowing 1 run on 3 hits to Tampa Bay. But, he did his best work from this mound last season, where in 12 starts, Gonzales had a 3.15 ERA and 1.25 WHIP.

We continue to fade Sabathia and back with our MLB picks a Baltimore team who is motivated by being off back-to-back losses, including last night’s set back at the hands of the Yankees.
