With the season just getting started, I am focusing on totals as we get a feel for things in the 2017 season. Here are 3 totals that I believe have value as Opening Day continues for these teams.

   Seattle Mariners vs. Houston Astros

Felix Hernandez starts on opening day for the Mariners yet again, as Seattle starts another quest to get the King a game in the playoffs. Both teams have potent offenses that could derail either starter in this AL West matchup.

The Mariners haven’t won an opening day game in quite some time, but that is a cheap pick from my standpoint today. Instead, let’s focus on the fact that these two teams have the best offensive rosters in the AL West coming into this season by far. These teams have a tendency to get into high scoring affairs in Houston as well with their games going over the listed total at an 11-7 rate over the last 3 seasons.

In addition to my prejudices against Mariners opening days, the Mariners are 5-0 cashing the Over in Felix Hernandez’s last 5 starts in Houston, and the Over is cashing in 6-2-1 in his last nine stars overall against the Astros. With no 2017 season trends to rely on, I’m taking the easy way out and placing a unit on this game going over 8 runs.

San Diego Padres vs. L.A Dodgers

The Padres just finished their worst season ever, and here they matchup with a Dodger team that could easily win over 100 games. Instead of taking a Dodgers bet at -400 on the moneyline, let’s take a look at the total offered at 5Dimes.

There is something to the total of 6 for baseball that I am attracted too, as I rationalize taking the Over no matter what like a moth to a light on a summer evening. In this case, both of these teams have had good recent success against the side of the starting pitcher of the opponent. The Dodgers scored 4.7 runs per game against right-handed starters last year, and in a bit of a reverse split, the Padres scored 4.5 runs against lefties.

Now, Clayton Kershaw is not the typical lefty, but with this looking to be a lopsided game all we are looking at here for the Padres is one or two runs for us to reach the number. Or, the Dodgers could just blow San Diego out and cover the number themselves. Either way, I’m grabbing Over 6 right now as one of my Monday MLB Picks.
