When preparing my MLB Picks, I am expecting a lot more runs than yesterday when the Oakland A’s take on the Houston Astros. I will be backing the over the total on this game.
Pitching Matchups and the O/U Betting Line
The MLB odds makers have come out with this game at a total of 8. With a lights-out pitcher like Sonny Gray it seems a little high, but the more we dig into the numbers the more I like the over in this spot. Gray comes in with 1.61 ERA and a WHIP just under 1.00, if you don’t know who he is by now then you have been hiding under a rock somewhere. He has great stuff, but like all pitchers he can hit a bit in the right spot. His career numbers are solid but this year he has only gone against one of the top hitting teams in the league once. That was in KC where he gave up 4 earned runs on 11 hits. Houston can hit a bit and should get to Gray a little to put some runs on the board, today will be his second toughest test of the season in my opinion. The veteran Roberto Hernandez comes in with an ERA over 4.00 both this season and his career. Spending most of his career with Cleveland he is now with his fourth team in as many years. He is a decent pitcher but his numbers don’t lie, he can get hit. This year out of six games where he went over five innings in only one of them did he give up less than three runs.
They Can Score
After a low scoring affair yesterday I think both of these clubs will bounce back today at the plate. The A’s are in the upper half of the league in most major offensive categories and rank 6th in runs per game. Although the Astros rank last in batting average, they do rank 12th in runs scored, 15th in total bases, and 9th in slugging.
This game has the potential to go over and I like the matchups. Don’t be surprised is Houston scores about four on Gray, the A’s should do at least the same against Hernandez, play the over for your Tuesday MLB pick.
