We’ll examine Saturday’s AL West clash between the A’s and Angels. Will the A’s rebound from a loss to the Angels on Friday in which they squandered a late lead? Can the Angels capture their fourth win in five games tonight?
AL West Clash in Anaheim on Saturday Night
The Oakland A’s and Los Angeles Angels will meet on Saturday in Anaheim at 10:05 PM ET. According to the MLB odds at BetOnline, the Angels are a -129 money line favorite, and the posted total is 7.5. These AL West rivals have gone 7-1 over the total in their eight meetings this season, and the Angels are 5-3 in those games.
The A’s will send right-hander Kendall Gravemen to the mound tonight. In 8 starts this season, he’s posted a lofty 4.83 ERA and 1.59 WHIP. The A’s hurler has made one start versus the Angels in 2015, lasted only 3.0 innings, allowed 2 earned runs on 4 hits, and walked 3 during a 6-3 loss. Gravemen has been much better on the road than at home this season, going 4-1 in his team starts with a stellar 1.98 ERA.
The Angels will go with veteran southpaw C.J. Wilson on Saturday. Wilson has posted a respectable 3.92 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in his twelve starts this season. Wilson is coming off terrible outings in his previous two starts versus the Yankees and Tigers. During those two appearances he allowed 11 earned runs on 11 hits in 13.0 innings. Wilson has gone 13-7 in his career team starts versus Oakland with a solid 3.10 ERA. All of those outings have come since 2010. He’s also gone an outstanding 52-19 in his career team starts when installed as a money line favorite of -125 to -175 just like he will be this evening. Wilson is also a perfect 11-0 in his team starts at home since the onset of the 2014 MLB campaign when facing an opponent with a losing record, and the Angels won those contests by a whopping average of 4.5 runs per game.
The Oakland A’s enter tonight having gone 2-5 in their previous seven games. The A’s are a dismal 4-11 when facing a left-handed starting pitcher this year, and are averaging just 3.5 runs per game in that role. The Oakland bullpen has been very shaky all season, posting an unimpressive 4.71 ERA as a staff, and that includes a horrible 5.66 ERA in away games. Oakland has gone a dismal 9-26 since the start of the 2014 season as a money line road underdog of +100 or more.
The Angels are coming off a 5-4 win over the A’s last night. They’ve now won three of their previous four games, and that stretch was preceded by a five game losing streak.
With all things being considered, and with a fairly reasonable money line price, I’m going to side with the home favorite for one of my free MLB picks on Saturday.
MLB Pick: Play the Angels -129 on the money line over the A’s at BetOnline.
