The New York Mets and New York Yankees have split the first two games of their three-game weekend series at Yankee Stadium. Which team will cash on the MLB betting lines in Game 3?
The New York Mets Can Win Because…
They are playing lights-out baseball, having recently won 11 in a row and moving to 14-4 overall. Underdogs in today's MLB odds, the Mets are getting great pitching from so many sources, and one of those sources is their starter on Sunday night, Jonathon Niese. Not only does he have a 1.50 ERA so far this season; Niese – who did not face the Yankees at all last season – has compiled that ERA in 18 innings of work. It’s not a huge sample size, but it’s not based on just one or two starts, either. Niese’s consistency is an excellent reason to recommend the Mets as the pick here. What can also be pointed out is that if there were any worries about the Mets losing focus following their loss to the Yankees on Friday, those concerns were blasted out of the water with a strong 8-2 win over the Pinstripes on Saturday.
The Mets are really rallying around each other. They’ve suffered multiple injuries and are winning in spite of them. This points to balanced contributions from everyone on the 26-man roster. Starters, bullpen, everyday position players, platoon players – they’re all pitching in. Lucas Duda is leading the way with a .323 average and a .400 on-base percentage with 11 doubles, giving this team both a high batting average and a lot of extra-base power. The Mets can win with balanced offense but one guy (Duda) setting the pace to take pressure off other players at times.
One other reason to recommend the Mets here: Yankee starter Nathan Eovaldi struggled against the Mets last year when he was a member of the Miami Marlins. Eovaldi, in two starts, got tagged by the Mets, giving up nine runs in 11 1/3 innings for a 7.15 ERA. The Mets have to feel confident about going up against Eovaldi here.
The New York Yankees Can Win Because…
They have a very solid pitcher who can regroup and pitch the way he’s capable of pitching. Nathan Eovaldi might have struggled against the Mets last year in the National League, but moving to the very difficult American League – with a designated hitter, a rougher prospect for pitchers – has not bothered Eovaldi. He has a solid 3.12 ERA through his first three starts, and in his most recent starts, he shut down the very powerful Detroit Tigers. Eovaldi went up against Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, J.D. Martinez, and the rest of the Tigers and held them to one run in seven quality innings of work. Eovaldi has the look of a pitcher who is ready to perform well in this game.
You also have to wonder when the Mets’ injuries – to Travis d’Arnaud and Jerry Blevins in addition to pitcher Zack Wheeler – plus the drug suspension to Jenrry Mejia will wear down this team. That’s going to be a concern for the Mets in the near future. It could matter in any tight game the Mets play.
The Mets might be injured, but Niese is pitching better than Eovaldi, and the Mets remain a confident team right now. They look like the team that should win this game. Take the Mets with your MLB pick.
