It is the middle matchup of this always intense rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox and New York wants to even the series in this afternoon battle, which will be on FS1, after last night's giveaway.

Both teams have stumbled of late, with New York 2-7 and Boston 2-4 and each wants to right the ship, especially with how important these games are with these clubs at the top of the AL East.

Each will start their best pitcher and hope the bats do enough to win the game.

Pitching Matchup - Severino vs. Sale

Luis Severino (5-4, 3.54 ERA) has alternated good and bad starts in his past four outings and will look to build on 10 strikeouts and two walks win over Milwaukee a week ago. The 23-year old is at his best when he is generating fly ball outs and whiffing batters. When Severino does this, his walks and hits allowed fall at the same time. The right-hander has done exceptional work in containing the No.2 and No.3 hitters in the opposing lineup, conceding a .164 average, which will matter today. Severino is 1-3 with a 3.91 ERA against Boston.

Move over David Price, there is a new ace in Bean-Town and Chris Sale (11-4, 2.75) is his name. Sale's 178 strikeouts is the most by a pitcher at the All-Star break in 15 years (Curt Shilling) and his WHIP of 0.90 is ridiculous. The lefty is hard to hit anywhere, but at Fenway, opposing batters have been held to .187 average and if Sale has ahead in the count and hitter has two strikes, they are at a mind-numbing 0.98 average. The Florida native is 4-2 with a nasty 1.54 ERA versus the Bronx Bombers.

The Long Ball Could Be Decider

With how skilled and hard both starting pitchers throw, a home run or two could be the deciding factor. That would mean a blast from Aaron Judge, Starlin Castro, Didi Gregorius or Matt Holliday (if he is DH) could help New York.

Conversely, if Severino serves one up, Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, Hanley Ramirez or Mitch Moreland could send one over the Green Monster in left or around Pesky's pole down the right field line.

Neither hurler surrenders many homers, which is why is why if somebody gets into one with a runner on, it could difference-maker.

Betting Odds, Head to Head and Bullpen Numbers

The overnight MLB odds had Boston as a -175 favorite with a total of 8.5, but do not be surprised if the total sinks to 8. These foes have split the last 22 encounters at Fenway, with the UNDER 11-9-2. As far as the bullpens, the Red Sox are second in ERA and the Yankees are third, but that is all they have in common, as Boston is second in save percentage in the AL and New York is 14th.

The Winner Is...

The best value for MLB picks is to grab the total of 8.5 UNDER right away. Both pitchers are very capable of keeping the score down and have pens that do not allow a lot runs. Also keep in mind Sale is 10-1 UNDER when working with seven or more days rest.
