Neither Offenses Provide Big Numbers When Tigers Visit White Sox

Tigers Vs White Sox Odds

Veterans James shields and Mike Pelfrey have both seen their share of tough luck this season. Today they face off when the Detroit Tigers visit the Chicago White Sox.

With this being an American League game the odds makers have set the total naturally pretty high but I expect both of these pitchers to come in and keep this total to a reasonable number.

The MLB odds have come out with the total at 10 at most places.  For my MLB pick I am going to back under the total like at Pinnacle Sports +102.  I expect some runs to be scored but this is too big a number looking closely at the situation and pitchers.

Detroit Tigers
Mike Pelfrey takes the mound for Detroit and comes in with a 4.95 ERA and 1.76 whip with the Tigers hitting .265 as a team which ranks eighth in the major leagues. Across the board this is a Detroit team that can really put up runs at times but at other times have struggled.

In their first five games after the All-Star break they averaged just three runs per game and today they're facing a rejuvenated pitcher  who is looking for a little bit of redemption against them. Pelfrey is a bit better than his numbers would indicate and on the road he has been solid with a 3.53 ERA. As well, he has pitched decent against the White Sox this season in two appearances allowing six earned runs in 12 innings.

By no means do I think he gets out of this game unscathed but he is a veteran pitcher and seems to always bounce back well off a bad start which he is coming off of allowing five earned runs in just two innings against Kansas City. In his last 10 starts two  times in which he allowed six earned and four earned he bounced back his next ballgame allowing zero and one runs respectively. Expect him to be decent enough to limit the damage.

Chicago White Sox
James Shields gets the start for Chicago and takes the mound with a 5.10 ERA and 1.52 whip with the White Sox hitting .250 as a team which ranks 19th in the major leagues. Currently they are six games out of the wildcard spot and seem to be slipping.

Offensively they have struggled since the All-Star break and in their first four games coming back they produced just a total of four runs but finally broke out a little bit scoring six and five the last two nights at Seattle. Shields has really turned his season around after his first three horrible starts with the White Sox allowing seven, six, and eight runs respectively he now has allowed just nine earned runs in his past five games.

He is coming off his best performance of the season allowing just one earned run off of two hits in eight innings against the Angels. The last time he faced Detroit he did not pitch well so he has an opportunity tonight to bounce back against them. Expect him to pitch well and be supported enough by a decent White Sox bullpen to keep Detroit in check.
