This MLB handicapper picked up a much-needed W Tuesday night when Boston, after blowing a big lead, rallied to beat Washington. We hope for similar success Wednesday as the Sox shoot for the series sweep.
Nats-Sox: Game 2 Review
Boston led Tuesday night 5-1 through four innings against Stephen Strasburg, but starter Justin Masterson couldn't hang on, giving up a six spot in the top of the fifth, thanks in part to two beanings. Down 7-5 into the bottom of the seventh the Sox then manufactured three runs, with help from two HBP's and three Washington errors. The Boston bullpen then recorded the last six outs to secure the victory.
Sox closer Koji Uehara, in his first appearance of the season, threw a perfect ninth, with two strikeouts, for his first save.
Strasburg gave up five runs and 10 hits through 5 1/3 innings, while Masterson gave up seven runs and eight hits through 4 2/3 innings. No wonder Tuesday's game played OVER its total of 8.5.
Boston is now 7-1 on the OVERS this season.
Nats-Sox: Game 3 Betting Odds
In the very early betting Boston and newcomer Wade Miley could be bet at -124 according to the MLB odds at BetOnline, while Washington and fellow lefty Gio Gonzalez were getting +117 at Heritage. And most shops were listing the total at 8.5 runs.
Wednesday's Pitching Preview
Miley will be making his second start of this season for his new team, after holding the Yankees to two runs and four hits through 5 1/3 innings in that game Boston eventually won in 19 innings last Friday 6-5. Miley retired the first 10 batters he faced, and took a shutout into the sixth, before giving up a couple of runs, then departing.
Last season, pitching for Arizona, Miley went 16-for-33 on quality starts (by our strict measures); the Diamondbacks, who finished 34 games under .500 overall, went 14-19 in Miley's starts, with the totals trending toward the UNDERS by a 20-12 margin.
Miley started once against Washington last year, scattering eight hits and four walks through 6 2/3 innings while keeping the Nats off the scoreboard in a game Arizona eventually lost 1-0.
Gonzalez will be making his second start of this season, after giving up three runs, five hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings of a 4-1 loss at Philly last Friday. Gonzo took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, left with the bases loaded, then got zero help from the bullpen, which allowed all three of his runners to score.
Last year Gonzalez went 12-for-27 on quality starts; Washington went 16-11 in those games, with the totals leaning toward the UNDERS by a 13-9 margin.
Gonzalez last started against Boston back in 2012.
Boston SS Xander Bogaerts missed Tuesday's game with a sore knee, and 3B Pablo Sandoval left Tuesday's game after taking a pitch off the foot. Their status for Wednesday is uncertain, so check the injuries page for more information.
Nats-Sox Game 3 Pick
The Sox are hot, the Nats are not, and there might not be any more to this game than that. And we like Miley; that 20-12 mark on the UNDERS last year tells us he was doing his part, so take the Red Sox with your MLB picks.
