With the pitching staffs in flux for Game 4 of the NLDS between the Nationals and Dodgers, our MLB handicapper brings up points to be considered in MLB picks as we look at a wager on Tuesday night's game.

2016 MLB Record: 53-40-4, +10.00 Units

The Washington Nationals took a 2-1 lead in their National League Divisional series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night, winning 8-3 on the heels of two 4-run innings and solid pitching by the Washington bullpen for 5.2 innings. Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda was knocked out of the game early after that 4 run 3rd inning by the Nationals, which led to the Dodgers having to use seven relievers throughout the rest of the game. With the Dodgers not having a starter named for game 4, the heavy use of the bullpen could have some dire consequences. Adding to the bullpen woes for both teams is that Game 4 will be the third game in three days for both teams, as Game 2 was postponed a day due to weather.

The Dodgers have named Clayton Kershaw todays starter, going with experience  over a rested arm.  This is the fourth year in a row he has started the NLDS in Game 4 in this situation. He has pitched well though in this same spot, posting a 1.89 ERA with a 23/4 K/BB ratio. He’s also one of a handful of pitchers in the history of the game to throw more than 100 pitches in a short rest start.

Kershaw also won Game 1 in this series, although he did only last 5 innings while giving up 3 earned runs on 8 hits.  He was not efficient in his outing, taking 101 pitches to get through those innings and throwing only 65 strikes.

For their part, the Nationals have tabbed Joe Ross with the start Tuesday.  He won't have to go deep to be effective as the Nationals bullpen has been brilliant in this series. Washington relievers have pitched 12.1 scoreless innings so far in the first three games.

The Dodgers losing this game was an anomaly on the season in Los Angeles, as they were 53-28 at home this year. That’s quite an advantage, with Kershaw on the hill I like the Dodgers chances of extending this series to a Game 5 back in Washington.
