In a series dominated by pitching, the Nationals go for a sweep as the underdogs on the MLB odds in Arizona against the Diamondbacks.

A rare 4-game road sweep is possible when ESPN turns its cameras on the Washington Nationals and Arizona Diamondbacks tonight (8 PM ET). Washington pins such hopes on Jeremy Hellickson (1-0, 2.28) with Arizona turning to Zack Godley (4-2, 3.83) to halt a 4-game skid. 5Dimes has the Diamondbacks -122 with an 8-run total favoring the ‘over.’

Pitching dominated the first three games of the set, beginning with Tanner Roark and Zack Greinke dueling Thursday before the Nats scored a 2-1 decision in 11 innings. That was followed by Max Scherzer shutting the D-backs down Friday in a 3-1 final, Anthony Rendon’s 8th-inning homer just enough to give us a run-line winner, and Stephen Strasburg keeping pace with his mound mates in a 2-1 result last night. It leaves the last five games between the two all falling short of the totals, seven of the last eight dating to last year.

Godley Yet To Allow HR At Chase In 2018

Hellickson got into the win column his last time out, working into the seventh in a 4-0 victory at San Diego. The 31 year old struck out a season-high eight without a walk, his second consecutive start without issuing a free pass or surrendering a run. Hellickson has only given up two homers in 27+ innings this season, and both came in an assignment vs. the D-backs in DC near the end of April, a no-decision for him and a 4-3 loss for the Nats. The righthander made 13 starts in this park while with Arizona in 2015, going 6-5 with a 4.00 ERA.

Godley failed to earn a decision his last time out, but it did end with the D-backs posting their fifth win in his seven trips to the mound. The former Tennessee star worked into the sixth against the Dodgers, surrendering four runs on six hits. He got just enough offense to beat the Nats in Washington last month, a 5-4 final in which he allowed all four of their runs to beat Stephen Strasburg as a +130 underdog on the MLB odds. Godley is 2-1 in three outings at Chase on the season, sporting a fine 1.96 ERA in the 18+ innings.

Umpire Notes, Roof Report & A Free Pick

Marty Foster is expected to have the dish for the series finale, the Denver native sporting an early 2-4 O/U return for scoreboard bettors. A veteran of 22 MLB seasons, Foster’s last six plate assignments at Chase Field have split the totals with the Diamondbacks winning four of the contests.

The roof was shut the first three games, and we expect the same for this one with a 1st-pitch thermometer reading close to 90°. With Arizona’s bats quiet, I’ll go with the underdog Nats for my free baseball pick.
