Sunday Night Baseball makes a stop in Pittsburgh on this long weekend, and we have a free MLB pick for the series finale between the Pirates and New York Mets.

Neither team is playing well right now, the New York Mets seven games under .500 and 9½ behind Washington in the NL East while the Pittsburgh Pirates are dead last in the NL Central and four games below breakeven. They will still get the marquee treatment from ESPN with a Sunday Night Baseball appearance, the matchup of struggling pitchers Matt Harvey and Tyler Glasnow a pick ‘em at Bookmaker where the 9 run total favors the low side.

Neil Walker homered twice and drove home four in New York’s 8-1 pasting of his former mates on Friday, Jacob deGrom shining on the mound for the Mets who closed -140 on the MLB odds. John Jaso starred off the bench for the Buccos on Saturday, singling in the ninth to knot the score and driving in the winner in the 10th as Pittsburgh prevailed 5-4. The Pirates have won seven of the last nine on this diamond, six of the last seven going ‘over.’

Mets Seeing Glasnow For First Time

After losing his six previous starts, the Mets finally got a win the last time Harvey took the mound. A high pitch count was behind him only working five frames, though he did allow the Padres just two runs and whiffed a half-dozen. Walks have been behind Harvey’s 5.36 ERA, as well as 11 homers already served up. His lone appearance at PNC Park came just a little more than two years ago, and it was ugly with the Bucs sending two over the fences and scoring seven times in Harvey’s four innings.

Glasnow is also coming off a fine performance in an otherwise disappointing season to date. The 6-8 righty worked six while surrendering just two runs in Atlanta, only to earn a no-decision in the Braves’ walk-off 6-5 triumph. It was Glasnow’s third quality start of May, however, and he will be facing New York for the first time in his brief career which could become even briefer if he can’t cut down on the long balls and walks like his counterpart.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Crew chief Jeff Nelson has the dish for the series finale, his 10th plate assignment of 2017 with five of the previous nine skipping past the totals. One of those ‘over’ winners was a game in New York that Harvey started just before his suspension, and the Braves cracked on the Mets’ righthander to the tune of six runs in 5.1 frames. The ‘over’ was also a winner in his two games at PNC under the mask last year.

Rain could muck this one up, the best chance for a thunderstorm a 70% mark right at game time. It will be in the mid-70s and humid with a light breeze out to right, and I’m rolling the dice on Glasnow and his Iron City gang for my free baseball pick.
