Yesterday the New York Mets brought the bats to the yard beating Pittsburgh 8-1. Today we are going to look at the total for this matchup and see where we can find some value.

New York Mets

Zack Wheeler takes the mound for New York and comes in with a 3.74 ERA and 1.29 whip and has pitched well over his last five starts. In that timeframe, he has allowed just nine earned runs total in almost 30 innings of work and it seems like he should come in and not struggle today against a light hitting Pittsburgh lineup. At the plate, the Mets have also been subpar most of the season in some categories like averaging just 8.24 hits per game and hitting just .240 as a team ranking them 20th and 22nd in the league respectively.

However, they have some pretty good power numbers across the board ranking 13th and 16th in slugging and OPS along with averaging 5.04 runs per game which rank them seventh in the major leagues. They also rank in the top 10 in strikeouts and walks per game so overall they been decently productive. All that being said and they did have a great day at the plate yesterday, I have a hard time believing they’ll be as productive today against Pittsburgh’s ace.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Gerrit Cole gets the start for Pittsburgh and comes in with a solid 3.36 ERA and 1.12 whip, but unfortunately, is sitting at just 2-5 in the win-loss column the season. For the most part this season he has been outstanding and has only had a couple bumpy outings which include his last time on the mound allowing five earned runs off of 10 hits in four innings in Atlanta mostly because of the two home runs he allowed. Other than that he is been really solid throughout the season and at home, he has been extremely good with a 1.67 ERA and batters hitting just .161 against him.

Across the board Pittsburgh has been one of the least productive offenses in all of baseball averaging just 4.06 runs per game, hitting .236 per game and averaging just 12.60 total bases per game ranking them 26th, 27th, and 27th respectively. Although they are at home and I expect for them to have better at-bats today than yesterday, and probably come out with a win, I just don’t see them putting up enough to get over this total.

N.Y. Mets vs Pittsburgh Pirates

Oddsmakers have come out with a total of 8 for this game and for my MLB pick, I’m pointing to back under the total. Although the line seems about right I like both of these pitchers to keep the run still minimum and put some zeros on the board.
