N.Y. Mets vs Atlanta Braves Odds & Free Picks

Mets pitcher Steven Matz

An earlier rainout leaves the Mets and Braves playing a doubleheader in Atlanta today, both games seeing late MLB odds released because of uncertainties on the mound.

If nothing else, the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves always provide good theater, even when their Win-Loss records aren’t that great. That’s certainly the case today with both sides sporting sub-.500 marks and looking at double-digit deficits to make up on the Washington Nationals in the NL East.

They’ll provide double the fun Saturday in Atlanta with a twinbill, but at this time, it has yet to provide double the betting opportunities thanks to Atlanta’s reluctance to announce starting pitchers in a timely fashion. Game 1 is set for 1 PM (ET) and features Robert Gsellman on the bump for the Mets opposite a Newcomb arm for the Braves. Game 2, which is our focus for this preview, is tentatively slated for 6 PM with a mound duel between Steven Matz and Matt Wisler. Once the numbers do come out, SBR’s live MLB odds will have them.

The series got underway Friday when Atlanta walked off with a 3-2 triumph, 5Dimes closing the Braves +106. This is the second series this year in the new Braves ballpark, all three in a previous series going ‘over’ the totals and the clubs splitting four games now.

Nightcap Finds Both Hurlers Making 1st Starts of ‘17

Matz is taking the mound for the first time since last August when a bad elbow shut him down and held him out of the first 10 weeks of the 2017 fixture. The southpaw made one rehab start in High-A ball and three more for Triple-A Las Vegas, working a combined 16.1 innings and striking out 20 while pitching to a 6.06 ERA, some of which can be attributed to the hitter-happy Pacific Coast League. He faced the Braves four times a year ago, the Mets winning three of them and Matz posting a 3.70 ERA.

Wisler has bounced between the Triple-A rotation and Atlanta’s bullpen in 2017, six relief appearances at the major league level yielding a 7.00 ERA while six starts on the farm left a 5.01 mark. This is his first look at the Mets this season, and the 24-year-old has a good track record against them in five previous assignments (3-1, 2.02 ERA).

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Just as teams are allowed to call up an extra player for doubleheaders, umpire crews often do the same thing, so we can’t be 100% certain who will call balls and strikes in the two contests. It lines up to be Tom Hallion (11-2 O/U) in Game 1 and Phil Cuzzi (5-8 O/U) for the second matchup. It will be the second plate assignment for each at this stadium.

The weather looks fine with the low-to-mid 80s for the start of each game. New York should be favored in both games, especially with slugger Yoenis Cespedes being activated today, and I’m looking for the second game to go ‘over’ run total for my free baseball pick
