Just 6 night games on this 1st Monday in the month of August but there are a sufficient amount of quality matchups in the MLB to make a betting profit and maintain our momentum.

You have a ton of good pitching matchups today with the likes of Greinke, Samardzija, Cobb, Richards, Simon, Scherzer, and of course Kluber. We might not see a lot of runs being scored today. The under the total can be prevalent in many matchups today as there’s only one matchup with a total over 7 runs listed. Let’s take a look.

Los Angeles Angels (66-44) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (63-49)
The Battle Of L.A.
Most people know that the Angels are an Anaheim team, but the title makes for good press and you have two of the most talented teams in the majors playing tonight in the Halos and the Dodgers.

Will Mike Trout be hearing some boos or cheers? I’m guessing that it will be a mixed crowd. This game is highlighted by a spectacular pitching matchup as Garrett Richards (11-4, 2.74)  of the Angels squares off against Zack Greinke (12-6, 2.65). I would have to say that Greinke gets the nod in this matchup as he’s been back to his original form while Richards has put up a couple of stinkers for his standards.

It has been a banner year for Garrett Richards and the Angels collectively as a baseball team, but in his last 2 starts, Richards has allowed 8 runs on 13 hits in 13 innings while losing both starts. These aren’t the worst performances in the world, but when you’re facing a pitcher the caliber of Zack Greinke, you need to be nearly perfect.

The Great Greinke
After a long streak of not allowing more than 2 runs in a start, Greinke had his own mid-summer slump, but is well past it.

In his last 2 starts, Greinke has pitched a total of 15 innings and allowed just 1 earned run while striking out 23 batters. Both of these pitchers pitch deep into ball games and it comes down to which offense can put up a good inning against the opposing team?

Matt Kemp
Matt Kemp has a long way to go before he reaches the superstar status that he was at before all of his injuries, but it looks like he’s headed in the right direction and at the right time.

Kemp has homered in his last 2 games and is batting .409 with 5 HR and 9 RBI in the last week alone. Even though he’s not the leader of the Dodgers squad anymore, Kemp might have the best chances of tagging Richards.

Leadoff man ,Dee Gordon, got to sit out Sunday , therefore he should be well-rested.

I like the Dodgers in this spot. Their offense might be a little bit deeper despite Mike Trout being the best player in this game and Zack Greinke gives them a huge edge.

Detroit Tigers (61-47) vs. New York Yankees (57-53)
McCarthy Gets His 1st Major Test As A Yankee
Thus far, the acquisition of Brandon McCarthy (6-10, 4.56) has been a successful one for the Yankees while only having to give up Vidal Nuno. McCarthy is a perfect 3-0 in the pinstripes, but he tonight he runs into a major test in the form of the Detroit Tigers.

Not only do the Tigers have Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez in their lineup, but Max Scherzer will get the start (13-3, 3.27). Can McCarthy elevate his game even that much further?

McCarthy has pitched exceptionally well for New York. In his last start, he had a little luck on his side as he allowed 4 runs and 9 hits in 6 innings to Texas and still managed to pick up the win. McCarthy knows that against a team like Detroit, he won’t be so lucky.

The Yankees are coming off of a major high as they managed to come back from a 7-4 deficit on Sunday Night Baseball to beat the lowly Boston Red Sox, 8-7. Brett Gardner was supposed to be a speedster at the leadoff position, but instead, he’s been knocking the ball out of the park like Albert Pujols. The Yankees will also be looking for the offense of Carlos Beltran who has been coming on like gangbusters.

Starting To Pay Off
Beltran has had 2 hits in each of his last 6 games and has started to see his offense return as his seasonal batting average has risen to a respectable .250.

.250 isn’t so great, but from where Beltran came from, it’s definitely acceptable. In the last week alone, Beltran is 12 for his last 25 with 1 HR and 5 RBI. The Yankees would like to see a little more power from Beltran but he’s definitely headed in the right direction. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was a factor in this game.

Miguel Cabrera might be the best player in the game in the last few seasons, but he might not be the best player on his own team this season. Victor Martinez has really elevated his game. He’s hitting .321 with 23 HR and 65 RBI on the season. We could see Martinez play a role in tonight’s game as he’s hit a home run in his last 2 games.

This is a tough game and I’m going to go with the Yankees momentum. Home field advantage and good odds are a plus. McCarthy has a major opportunity to prove something tonight.
