Coming off of a 2-0 day on Sunday we're finishing the regular season with a bang, as the playoff situation is starting to clear up a bit. That said, some teams are in "desperation mode". Find out who are those teams, that will help four your MLB Picks of the Day.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Chicago White Sox

"Big Game is Back"
Whenever there's a start concerning James "Big Game" Shields (5-18, 5.98 ERA), it's a treat for the bettors as he's an "insta-fade". Shields has gone from an above average pitcher to a pitcher that's being shipped from place to place and is lucky to be on a major league team.

In his last 10 starts, Shields has failed to record a single victory and is 0-6 during that period of time. In his last start, he got battered around by the Philadelphia Phillies in a 7-6 loss which saw him allow 6 runs on 9 hits in 5 1/3 innings. While Tampa Bay is at the bottom of the American League East Division at 65-90 and is looking to play out the string, this is a rare opportunity for the Rays to pick up a "W" as Shields is simply awful.

The Rays have lost 3 consecutive games themselves, but this can be excused as they faced the Boston Red Sox and were swept. Boston is currently on an 11 game winning streak and any team that's on their schedule is in for a rough time.

"Longo"
Although he'll never be a player the caliber of Mike Trout and never make the Baseball Hall of Fame, Evan Longoria is a really good Major League hitter and is the type of player that will take advantage of poor pitching; whether he's on a hot streak or running cold.

Thus far this season, Longoria has been the main source of offense for the Tampa Bay Rays as he lead's the team with 36 HR, 95 RBI and a .278 BA. Longoria has had a ton of production on the road this season as he's hitting.295 with 19 HR and 53 RBI's on the road.Longoria is coming off of a game in which he reached base 60 % of the time ( 2 for 4 with a walk), but we have to throw his recent performances out as it was against the Red Sox. Before the Boston series, he was on fire and the level of competition has take a major drop. Look for Longoria to possibly be a factor in this game as the Rays are the slight betting favorite on the road according to 5 Dimes Sportsbook.

This game is clear cut and the betting odds indicate this. Although the Rays are a team that's in the last place and facing a superior team on the road, they're the betting favorites in this game. This is because of the starting pitching and James Shields' inability to do anything positive. Take the Rays for your MLB pick as Shields can't seem to buy a win.

Cincinnati Reds vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Golden Opportunity For the Cards
Now that they have the Cubs out of the way, the St. Louis Cardinals (81-74) can concentrate on winning ball games as they're on the outside looking in where the post-season is concerned. Currently, the Cardinals are a 1/2 game behind the San Francisco Giants for the final wild-card spot in the NL and 1 1/2 games behind the Mets. While it's not a "must win situation" for the Cardinals, it's a great opportunity to make up ground as they face a Cincinnati Reds team with a superstar in Joey Votto, but still a team that's not used to winning at 65-90. That said, the Reds have won their last 2 games.

A Monster Season
Although his team may be a bottom-feeder, Joey Votto has had a monster season and has given the Reds fans something to cheer about and has given the opponent something to think about everytime he steps to the plate.

For the season, Votto is hitting a scorching hot .320 with 26 HR and 89 RBI. His on-base percentage is an unbelievable .434! Votto has always managed to have a high percentage rate on base each season and that's a statistic that is very important and often overlooked. It would be in starter Jaime Garcia's (10-12, 4.59 ERA) best interest to pitch cautiously and allow a free pass at the worst when facing this Canadian superstar. For his career, Votto is 16 for 43 with 1 HR and 7 RBI's in 43-at-bats against Garcia. Look for Votto to be productive in this game.

The Reds are really a team with nothing to lose while the Cardinals are a team that can't seem to win at home. The Cards are just 33-41 at home. Let's take the value as St.Louis isn't worthy of these MLB odds.
