On a somewhat abbreviated MLB schedule for this Monday, will we see a lot of runs scored today and will that play a role in our MLB Picks of the Day is the question.

Boston Red Sox at Kansas City Royals
I've been very good with totals, but the complexion of the Red Sox games could change as they leave Fenway Park and head off for Kauffman Stadium, home of the Defending World Series Champion Kansas City Royals.

In the Red Sox last 7 games, they've score a total of 73 runs. They've simply been tearing the cover off of the ball as they dominated in their respective series' against Oakland and Houston. Even though the Kansas City Royals haven't played up to expectations, the environment will be different in K.C. and the Royals have played some real low scoring games with solid pitching.

In their last 3 games, the Royals have outscored their opponent 14-3, but we have to remember that this was the Atlanta Braves, who are the worst team in baseball.

New and Improved Rick Porcello
In this game, Boston sends Rick Porcello (6-1, 3.11 ERA) to the mound and Porcello really hasn't needed the run support as he's exceeded expectations this season and is a huge reason why Boston is near the top of the division.

In his last 6 starts, Porcello has provided a quality outing in each game, pitching at least 6 innings and not allowing more than 3 runs per ball game. He's also been fairly tough on the road with a 3.26 ERA.

Porcello's not going to give up a lot of home runs and in this game it won't really matter as Kansas City is more of a small ball type of team with their leaders, Lorenzo Cain (5 HR, 18 RBI, .274 BA) and Eric Hosmer (6 HR, 17 RI, .336 BA) leading the way. Expect Cain to improve greatly as the season progresses. He started off really slow and has been on fire as of late. He's a threat in the field, on the basepath, and at the plate. This should be a competitive series.

I'm going to lean towards the Under 8 here as an MLB pick. We have two good pitchers and the Red Sox simply can't keep up this pace.

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers
I'm a little bit surprised that the Detroit Tigers (16-21) aren't more of a betting favorite here. They have too much talent to be an under.500 team and they're playing a team in the Minnesota Twins (4-16 on the road), who are as bad as the Atlanta Braves. The Tigers are just a -149 on MLB odds. This is a team with Ian Kinsler, Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, J.D. Martinez, and Nick Catellanos. The Twins don't have half the talent offensively or defensively that the Tigers do despite Detroit's unattractive record.

Bounce Back Situation
The Tigers had lost 4 games in a row, but come into the new week with a decent taste in their mouth as they defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 on Sunday. Another good sign is that the top 3 guys in the batting order in Kinsler, Martinez (J.D.) and Cabrera all had 2 hits or more and all went deep.

The Tigers are just waiting for Miggy to ignite as he's the best player in baseball in the last decade and he's a game changer. Cabrera picked up his 6th home run of the season yesterday to go along with his 19th and 20th RBI's and his batting average is starting to creep up as it's now at .286. This is a guy that's good for .330 per season and I expect him to be near that as we're only a little more than a month into the season.

Bottom line is Minnesota is a disaster on the road with young players and doesn't know how to win. They're entering the "Lion's Den" at Commerica Park and will get eaten alive. Detroit looks good here.
