Ross Benjamin examines a pair of starting pitching matchups today in the games between the Blue Jays/Yankees and Brewers/Pirates. Read his informative MLB handicapping article, and find out who he gives the best MLB betting values to in each of these contests.

Blue Jays vs. Yankees 4:05 PM ET
The Toronto starter Marcus Stroman has pitched very well at the Rogers Centre in Toronto this season. Unfortunately his road appearances have been far less impressive. As a matter fact, in his last 4-starts on the road, Stroman has posted a massive 9.76 ERA, and a whopping 2.36 WHIP.

The Yankees starter Chris Capuano has really struggled at home this season in his relatively short tenure with the Yankees. The southpaw has seen his last 4-starts at Yankees Stadium all go over the total, posting a huge 8.44 ERA, and he allowed 5 home runs in just 16.0 innings of work. Capuano started 3-times versus the Blue Jays since the start of the 2013 season, all 3-games went over the total, and his lofty 4.86 ERA in those outings were a key contributor to those high scoring affairs.

Advantage: I’m not giving neither of these pitchers the betting edge in this one. However, I do have a strong lean toward making a wager on this game going over the total for my MLB picks.

Brewers vs. Pirates 7:05 PM ET
The Brewers will send veteran right-hander Matt Garza to the mound for this key NL Central battle. He’s displayed bad form over his last 3-starts, posting a lofty 5.44 ERA, and a large 1.77 WHIP. Garza has also had a difficult time on the road in 2014, going 4-8 against the money, in addition to an unimpressive 5.02 ERA. Since the start of the 2012 season, Garza has seen all 5 of his starts versus the Pirates go over the total, and his terrible 5.76 ERA certainly was instrumental in those games being high scoring affairs.

The Pirates will counter with right-hander Edinson Volquez for game 2 of this series. Volquez has been in stellar form over his last 4-starts with an excellent 1.67 ERA. He’s had 4-starts versus the Brewers in 2014, and posted a very good 2.88 in those outings. Volquez has been a money pitcher at PNC Park in Pittsburgh this season, going 11-5 against the money, and based on 1.0 unit wagers, has shown 5.8 units of profit.

Advantage: I’m got to revert back to one of my old adages in this one. “See what you bet, and bet what you see”. My strong lean resides with Edinson Volquez of the Pirates over Matt Garza of the Brewers.
