We start the first week of May for betting baseball and look into a trio of tilts and MLB Picks that all have a different flavor to the wagering appetite of sports bettors everywhere expects.

We start the evening with a rematch of last year's National League wild card clash and this is followed by interleague action in the upper Midwest. The last stop in reviewing the MLB odds from Intertops is a truly stunning series opener of two American League last place teams.

Pittsburgh's Cole To Contain Cubs
The Chicago Cubs have a three-game lead in the NL Central over Pittsburgh, but the Pirates are a -117 home favorite to close the gap with Gerrit Cole (2-2, 2.78 ERA) climbing the mound. For Cole, this is personal, having been the postseason loser to the Cubs and while a victory will not take away that pain, it is a new season and redemption would feel good.

Cole is 7-1 with a 2.88 ERA in nine regular-season outings versus Chicago (Pirates 8-1) and is backed by a far better offense which is averaging 5.3 runs per game. Cole's mound foe is Jason Hammel (3-0, 0.75), who has gotten off to a brilliant start and is 5-4 lifetime against the Bucs with a 3.99 ERA.

Chicago's great start has been helped by an offense averaging 6 RPG, but they have only reached double digits in hits once in past seven outings and the Pirates are 15-6 with Cole starting against winning teams.

Weaver and Angels Mow Down Milwaukee
In Jered Weaver's decade of service with the team from Anaheim, only one prior time has he pitched in Miller Park, which was in August of 2013 when he delivered six scoreless innings versus the Brewers in 5-0 victory. Weaver is not the same pitcher he was back then, with even less velocity, but he's been able to get by on guile and knowledge and is 3-0 (3.86 ERA) this season.

Los Angeles at 12-13 is about their speed, likely to end up a .500 team, which is not where Milwaukee will finish. The Brewers enjoyed a big 14-5 mauling of Miami on Sunday, but that was just their second victory in nine games.

The Brew Crew's Jimmy Nelson (3-2, 3.16) has thrown well thus far in 2016, yet his team has only won consecutive games twice this season and has never defeated the Halos at home (0-8).

Big Number on Slumping Houston and Keuchel
While Minnesota being in last place is a surprise to few, seeing AL championship participant Houston is stunning to many. The Astros return home at 8-17, already down -12.1 units, being play against material for MLB picks. However tonight, they are -185 home favorites against Minnesota, who is one game worse at 7-18 (-11.2).

The pitching matchup is the reason. Dallas Keuchel (2-3, 4.41) has not been the same pitcher as the last year and half, but at Minute Maid Park, the lefty has won a franchise-record 17 straight regular season decisions with a 1.47 ERA over 22 starts, with the Astros a superb 20-2.

Minnesota has lost their last four contests and pitching has been the problem in permitting 25 runs. The will hand the ball to one of their top prospects Jose Berrios, who is making his second big league start after dominating Triple-A competition at Rochester. If the money line is too pricey for you, consider the run line since the Twins are 0-10 as a road underdog of +100 or higher this year, losing by 2.6 RPG.
