The New York Yankees and Texas Rangers both came out sluggish in their first series after the All-Star break, as the two teams prepare to meet Monday night.

Let’s take a closer look at the MLB betting lines for this American League matchup at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Falling back

New York suffered an 8-7 extra-innings loss to the Boston Red Sox as +131 road underdogs on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, while going OVER the betting total of 8.5.

The Yankees are now seven games back of their hated rivals in the AL East division, but they’ve still gone 10-7 in July this season.

Pitching woes

Texas has dropped seven of its last eight games, including a 4-2 setback to the Baltimore Orioles as -137 home favorites Sunday, as the starting rotation has compiled a terrible 7.21 ERA over that span.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the Rangers are 24-15 as home favorites of -175 to -200, with the OVER going 23-15-1 in that situation.

Yankees starting pitcher Ivan Nova (4-2, 3.63 ERA) has put together a 2.28 ERA in his last three starts, which includes an 8-1 home victory over the Kansas City Royals on July 10, as he allowed one run and five hits over eight frames.

The right-hander is 1-1 with a 5.51 ERA in four road outings (two starts), with opposing hitters batting .317 against him.

In four career games versus the Rangers, Nova is 2-1 with a 5.09 ERA, including a win in his only appearances at this ballpark on May 6, 2011.

Rangers starting pitcher Yu Darvish (8-4, 3.02 ERA) will make his first appearance since landing on the 15-day disabled list with an upper back strain, as he looks to bounce back from a 9-5 home loss to the Houston Astros in his last effort on July 6.

The right-hander is 5-3 with a 3.14 ERA in 11 home appearances, with opposing hitters batting .207 against him.

In two career games versus the Yankees, Darvish has tallied a 1-0 record and 1.98 ERA, but didn’t earn a decision in a 4-3 road defeat on June 25.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Rangers as one of their MLB picks Monday, as they’ve gone 18-8 in Darvish’s last 26 home starts.
