Saturday’s Game 3 shifts the action to Busch Stadium, with St. Louis’ Joe Kelly meeting Boston’s Jake Peavy in a duel of righties.  Let's make sure that we understand the MLB betting lines.

The St. Louis Cardinals came from behind in Thursday’s 4-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox, evening the World Series as 104 road dogs on most MLB odds boards.

Cardinals, Beltran edge Sox

Cardinals slugger Carlos Beltran capped off a three-run surge for St. Louis in Thursday’s seventh inning, driving in mate Daniel Descalso with an RBI-single. St. Louis’ starter Michael Wacha held Boston to three hits over six frames, while relievers Carlos Martinez and Trevor Rosenthal logged a hold and save, respectively.

Boston’s David Ortiz cracked his second homer of the series, giving his side a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning. Red Sox outfielders Shane Victorino and Jonny Gomes were both held to 0-for-4 nights, while first baseman Mike Napoli left four men on base.

Kelly goes five in defeat

Kelly has been idle since Oct. 16, lasting five innings in St. Louis’ 6-4 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 25-year-old gave up two homers as part of seven hits, dropping the affair as a 152 road dog.

St. Louis edged Los Angeles in hits on that occasion, 10-9, with Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday drilling a pair of doubles in a 3-for-4 outing. Hollliday’s mates Yadier Molina and David Freese both went 0-for-4, with Molina striking out twice.

Peavy shelled in Detroit

The same day’s card saw Peavy lit up in a 7-3 defeat for Boston to the Detroit Tigers, failing to cash as a 101 road dog. Peavy surrendered seven earned runs in three innings, giving up five hits and three walks.

Boston’s Jacoby Ellsbury notched a 4-for-5 night, driving in one of his side’s late runs. The Red Sox’ four relievers held serve down the stretch, including a pair of shutout frames from rookie Brandon Workman.

Back the UNDER in St. Louis

BetOnline opened St. Louis as a 107 home favorite, with early wagers on the ‘chalk’ lifting the MLB odds to minus 110. The ‘total’ was first set at a flat 7 ½, followed by UNDER action adding a minus 125 premium to its side.

I am tailing the ‘steam’ here, adding the UNDER to Saturday’s sports picks.

Boston has been held to 2.8 RPG in its last four postseason road spots, with the UNDER cashing at 2-1-1. The Red Sox have seen little of Kelly’s arm, with Shane Victorino and Stephen Drew uniting to hit a subpar 1-for-5 against the righty in their days with the National League.

St. Louis has seen the UNDER collect at 10-3-1 in its last 14 interleague home dates against right-handed starters. Peavy has held his own against the Cardinals’ lineup, including no extra base hits from top hitter Yadier Molina (.319 BA) in a 3-for-17 career mark.

Umpire Dana DeMuth is slated behind home plate for Game 3, with the UNDER going 6-1-1 in the Ohio native’s last eight called affairs. The span included an August contest in St. Louis having Kelly on the hill, with the visiting Atlanta Braves notching just two runs.

Look for the UNDER to get the money again here for our MLB picks, adding another cashed ticket to the wager’s 4-1 mark in Kelly’s last five home starts against clubs with winning records.
