Al East rivals collide as the Red Sox invade Tampa Bay tonight to begin a three-game set with the Rays. Let's review this matchup, as well as the MLB odds and cash a winner.

It's bad enough that I have to stare Monday morning in the face as I write this but even worse that, after perusing the MLB Odds yesterday, I included the Houston Astros in my MLB Picks which struck out like JJ Gold at a supermodel convention. I can't even call it a bad beat because it was much more of a poor decision as the Astros fell 6-1 to the Royals, in a series that saw Houston's bats explode with 26 combined runs from the two prior games but managed just one yesterday. Yet are still well in front of the books as we cruise into this one plus nearly 20 units.

It's time to get back on that pony and start a new streak. Let's take a peek at two teams that are struggling mightily to stay relevant in the AL East as Boston flies south to meet the Rays in Tampa Bay. Let's go!

Boston Red Sox (41-34, -1.6 units)
The Red Sox have lost five of their last seven and if there is a single constant on this team, it is that their pitching is woefully inconsistent. Yesterday, the Sox tapped Clay Buchholz to toe the slab and the results were pretty much in line with his other, largely ineffective performances this season, as Boston bowed 6-2 in Texas to the Rangers. Boston's offense still remains, statistically at least, at the top of the heap as they lead the league in runs scored (419), team batting average (.287) and on base percentage (.355) while tied for 1st in slugging percentage (.470) with Colorado.

Eduardo Rodriguez (1-2, 6.41 ERA, 1.46 WHIP) will take the hill for Boston in the opener of this three-game series and will look to get on track after taking a loss in his last outing against the White Sox in which he allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits in six innings of work which resulted in the 8-6 defeat. Rodriguez entered the season late after rehabbing from a knee injury and hasn’t been the same breath of fresh air that he was in his rookie campaign. Boston won both his starts against Tampa last season as Rodriguez allowed a combined six runs on 12 hits in those victories combined.

Tampa Bay Rays (31-43, - 16.5 units)
The Rays are in the midst of shame spiral after dropping their last 11 straight and now find themselves in the cellar of the AL East. They are not surprisingly in the bottom third in three of the four major offensive statistical categories. Rays pitching was hammered yet again on Sunday when they were defeated 12-5 by the division leading Baltimore Orioles.

Tampa sends a young southpaw to the mound as Blake Snell (0-2, 2.40 ERA, 1.60 WHIP) will deal tonight. Snell surrendered three runs on seven hits in six plus innings of work in a 6-0 loss to Cleveland on Tuesday night. Snell has not yet faced the Red Sox in his short tenure in the majors.

Betting Analysis
Things have not been going well recently for the Red Sox but their bumpy road is a walk in the park compared to the travails in Tampa. The Rays’ starter Blake Snell has an ERA that is deceptive to be sure. Snell has issued seven walks in his 15 innings of work this season and though he looked serviceable in his last outing in Cleveland, it should be noted he was touched for five runs (only one earned) on eight hits in just three plus innings of work against Seattle which resulted in a 6-4 loss. His 1.60 WHIP is far more indicative of his performances this season than his impressive ERA.

The Red Sox offense poses a huge threat to the young lefty and though their young starter, Eduardo Rodriguez, has had issues of his own he pitched for the first time without a brace in his last start and appeared more poised than in previous performances. I will side with the better team here against a young pitcher who has yet to face the most prolific offense in baseball.
