The playoff race is a really starting to heat up & today is another important matchup holding great betting value. Two very solid pitchers take the mound in what should be a tight low-scoring affair.

MLB odds
Odds makers came out with this line at eight, and at some online spotsbooks it still there, but at some places it's at 7.5. For my MLB pick under the total play of the day I'm going to take a little bit of plus money on that 7.5. The best MLB odds for that is at Pinnacle sports at +113. At most books I am anticipating this line to settle at that 7.5.

Seattle Mariners
Hisashi Iwakuma takes the mound for the Mariners and comes in with a 3.67 ERA, 1.05 whip, 102 strikeouts, and a 9-4 record. He is one of my favorite pitchers in the league because I had a lot of opportunities to watch him pitch in Japan. In his last 10 starts he got roughed up in just one outing versus Oakland but besides that he has been stellar. In his last five starts he has only allowed seven total earned runs in about 30 innings pitched. Seattle is technically still in it and I expect him to come out and perform well today against an underachieving offense in the Angels.

Seattle ranks 22nd in the league in runs per game at 4.08, 13th in OPS at .726, and 23rd in batting average hitting .250 as a team. They have really played a lot better in the second half of the season but it looks like they're not quite going to make it. They travel well in both their runs per game and OPS go up on the road. Today though they're facing a very good home pitcher and I don't foresee them putting up a lot of runs. Much like the Angels, I think they have underachieved this year at the plate considering the talent they have.

Los Angeles Angels
Jered Weaver gets the start for Los Angeles and comes in with a 4.86 ERA, 1.26 whip, 85 strikeouts, and a 7-12 record. Like most good major league pitchers he is just a different monster at home with a 2.87 ERA and 1.18 whip. Against Seattle he has struggled this year in just 10 innings allowing seven earned runs for an ERA just under 6.00, but at home today he should settle in and put up some zeros on the board. In his last 10 starts he has only pitched four of those at home, and in those he has only allowed five total earned runs.

Los Angeles ranks 25th in the major leagues in runs scored per game at 4.03, 25th in OPS at .695, and last in batting average hitting .244 as a team. As I mentioned earlier, they have underachieved all year considering what they have in that lineup. Their statistics don't change very much at home and this game sets up to be more of a pitcher's duel than for either of these offenses to have big days at the plate.

For one of your MLB picks today I recommend the under in this spot. Both Los Angeles and Seattle I believe have underachieved this season and today's pitchers in this situation should thrive. Look for real tight low-scoring game that will go down to the final innings.
