It's Tuesday, so you know what that means in the world of baseball. We've got another huge slate coming up tonight, so let's break down the odds and see which total picks stand out most.
Texas Rangers (Gallardo) VS. Boston Red Sox (Miley)
Our first stop is the historic Fenway Park, where the Red Sox will play host to the Rangers. Boston is a firm -120 favorite on the MLB betting odds board, while the total is at 8.5 runs.
We'll have Wade Miley and Yovani Gallardo pitching tonight, which would explain why we see a high total on the board. Miley has been a mess, going 2-4 with a 5.60 ERA and 1.50 WHIP through his first seven starts of the season. The left-hander managed to escape major trouble in his latest start, allowing five hits and zero earned runs over 6 and 2/3 innings in a 2-0 road win over Oakland. Will Miley be able slow down Texas tonight?
He'll be opposed by Gallardo, who comes in with a 3-5 win-loss record to go with a 3.94 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. Gallardo has allowed three or fewer runs in all but one of his starts this season and has been one of the most reliable starters in the rotation for Texas so far. It's been surprising to see how effective the Rangers' pitching has been early on, and Gallardo has been a big part of that.
While the right-hander may be pitching well, we're not so sure he's going to be able to shut out these Red Sox tonight. Yes, Boston has been disappointing offensively, but we know the power potential is there on any given night - that comes with the territory when you've got big boppers like David Ortiz, Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval among others.
Throw in Miley's struggles (with Adrian Beltre notorious for slaying lefties) and we like the look of the OVER for our first total pick of the night. A lot of power will be on display the plate tonight, and we're just not sure the pitchers will be able to keep up.

Chicago Cubs (Hammel) VS. San Diego Padres (Shields)
We'll close out the night in San Diego, with the Padres and Cubs set to do battle in what should turn out to be a low-scoring game.
San Diego is favored at right around -135, with Chicago priced out in the +115 to +125 range. The total is what we care most about here though and that number is all the way down at 6.5, a stark contrast from our first breakdown between Boston and Texas.
Why so low? Just look at the scheduled starters and how they've been performing and that'll tell you all you need to know. James Shields get the call for the Padres and he's been solid, going 5-0 with a 3.93 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in his first eight starts. He's posted a 64:15 K:BB ratio over 48 and 1/3 innings of work.
Shields will need to be dialed in to guide his team to a win, as the Cubs will have their own stud in Jason Hammel taking the bump. Hammel is 3-1 with a 3.11 ERA and 0.99 WHIP thus far this season and has looked especially strong over his previous four outings. Whenever you've got a WHIP under 1.00, you know you're doing something right.
As you can see, both starters have been doing their thing, so we feel good about the UNDER hitting tonight as our MLB pick, especially since the game will take place in a pitcher's paradise in San Diego. Shields and Hammel have been pitching well, so we'll be on the lookout for another pitcher's duel this evening.
