The Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals have both busted out offensively in July, which will lead to plenty of runs being scored in their series-opening contest Thursday night. Let’s take a closer look at the MLB betting odds for this American League Central matchup at Kauffman Stadium, with the first pitch scheduled for 8:10 p.m. ET.

Important series
Detroit owns a 4.5-game lead over Kansas City in the division standings, as it hits the road after a 6-3 homestand, which came to an end by picking up a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers as -108 home favorites Thursday afternoon.

The Tigers are hitting .308 during this calendar month, which happens to be the top mark in baseball—four spots above the Royals at .288.

MLB handicappers will find that the franchise is 11-4 on the road with a money line of -100 to -125, with the OVER going 9-5-1 in that situation.

Out for revenge
Kansas City produced a 5-4 record on its recent road trip, which has included an alternating pattern of wins and losses over its last four contests, as it looks to build off a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays as +111 underdogs Thursday.

The Royals have dropped six of nine games against the Tigers in the 2014 season series, as they look to gain revenge from suffering a three-game home sweep in early-May.

It’s important to point out that the team is 9-1 at this ballpark with a money line of -100 to -125 this year.

Tigers starting pitcher Drew Smyly (4-8, 3.89 ERA) has dropped back-to-back efforts, including a 6-3 home defeat to the Rays last Friday, as he surrendered five runs and seven hits over 5.1 innings of work.

The left-hander is 2-3 with a 3.99 ERA in eight road outings (seven starts)—issuing 15 walks and striking out 38 batters in 38.1 combined frames.

Smyly has produced a 1-1 record and 1.29 ERA in two starts versus the Royals in 2014.

Royals starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie (5-7, 4.10 ERA) was handed a 7-3 road defeat by the Cleveland Indians last time out, as he gave up six runs and 11 hits over four innings.

The right-hander is 3-4 with a 3.54 ERA in nine home games, with opposing hitters batting .257 against him (.283 on the road).

In four career starts versus the Tigers at this venue, Guthrie has compiled a 4-0 record and 3.51 ERA.

I’m going to recommend that readers play the total as one of their MLB picks, as the OVER is 5-2 in the last seven overall meetings in this series.
Pick:  Over 8
