The Oakland Athletics have had trouble closing out their postseason series. Today, they prepare to take on the Detroit Tigers for the final game of their American League set.

Let’s take a closer look at the MLB betting odds for Game 5 of this 2013 American League Division Series at Coliseum. The first pitch in tonight's game is scheduled for 8:07 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on TBS.

On the road again

Detroit extended this best-of-five series by picking up an 8-6 victory over Oakland as -143 home favorites Tuesday, while going ‘Over’ the betting total for a second consecutive affair.

The Tigers are now in position to try to pull out an ALDS Game 5 on the road for a third consecutive year, but they may have to do it without any thunder in the lineup. Third baseman Miguel Cabrera and first baseman Prince Fielder have zero extra-base hits in 31 combined at-bats through four games of this series.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the franchise is 10-13 on the road with a money line of -100 to -125, with the ‘Under’ going 14-8-1 in that situation.

Very little success

Oakland has dropped 11 of its last 12 postseason clinching games, including an 0-5 mark in Game 5 of ALDS showdowns, which is the main reason why the club will likely go off as a home underdog on the betting odds page.

The Athletics have been a very resilient team since the start of the regular season—posting a 40-27 record following a loss.

Since 2011, the club is 54-37 at home when the total is 7 or less in the market, with the ‘Under’ going 42-40-9 in those 91 opportunities.

Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander (13-12, 3.46 ERA) didn’t earn a decision in a 1-0 road loss to the Athletics in the second game of this series, as he allowed four hits and seven runs over seven shutout innings.

In his last three postseason starts against Oakland, the right-hander has allowed just a single run over 23 combined frames.

Athletics starting pitcher Sonny Gray (5-3, 2.67 ERA) matched Verlander pitch-for-pitch last Saturday, as he scattered four hits over eight strong innings, while issuing two walks and striking out nine batters.

The rookie right-hander allowed opponents to hit just .200 against him at home during the regular season.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Athletics in their MLB picks, as they’ve gone 5-2 in their last seven games as a home underdog.
